The Cartouche

• A CARTOUCHE is a kind of name plate
• Ancient Egyptians used cartouches for kings,
  queens, and other high-ranking people in the
  kingdom.
• A cartouche consists of a number of different
  hieroglyphic symbols enclosed in a loop

The Nomen and Pre-Nomen

• For your cartouche you will need to have two
  names The Nomen and Pre-Nomen
• (Write down this information)
• The Nomen Pharaohs or Queens real name- given
  at birth
• The Pre-Nomen The throne name name by which the
  Pharaoh was addressed
• in diplomatic correspondence
• This will be something you make up-
• i.e. Oh Great One

Your Assignment

• You are going to be creating your own Egyptian
  drawing complete with TWO cartouches (1 Nomen and
  1 Pre-Nomen)
• Your drawing will be done in true Egyptian style

Here are your instructions

• Draw yourself as a pharaoh or queen in the
  correct Egyptian style.
• Dress and accessorize your figure as befitting
  your station as pharaoh or queen
• Personalize your image by giving the figure an
  object to hold that might be identified with you
• Draw other figures or items as background, and to
  show your importance and power.
• Draw a cartouche for both your nomen and
  pre-nomen written in hieroglyphics. This means
  you will have TWO!!!
• Use lots of colors as they did on the walls of
  the pyramids.

A Few Reminders

• Make sure you turn in your INSTRUCTION SHEET and
  RUBRIC along with your drawing.
• You will only have todays class time to complete
  your drawing, so use it wisely!!! Anything you do
  not finish is homework!!
• Your drawings will be due at the beginning of
  class tomorrow, WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 12th!!!
• It is worth a total of 40 POINTS, so make sure
  you follow the instructions and the rubric
  carefully!!!
