2EMnet Receiver Configuration Tutorial
3The EMnet receiver program is the heart of the
EMnet messaging system. It is responsible for
all communications and is designed to be running
at all times while the computer is powered on.
Once the EMnet software has been installed, the
receiver program automatically starts when
Windows starts. If Windows does not start,
neither will EMnet! Be sure the computer will
not be stuck unattended at a login prompt!
4When the EMnet Receiver starts, the
Initialization Dialog below appears for 30
seconds.
If you click Cancel, EMnet will not load.
If you click Initialize now, EMnet will load
immediately.
If you click Reconfigure, EMnet will open the
Configuration dialog.
5You may also enter the Configuration dialog
byright-clicking on the satellite icon and
selecting Reconfigure Receiver.
NOTE Selecting Reconfigure Receiver will
temporarily interrupt EMnet reception.
6If you choose to open the CONFIGURATION dialog,
you may be required to enter the case-sensitive
password.
PRESS SPACEBAR OR CLICK MOUSE TO PROCEED
7This will open the EMnet Receiver Configuration
dialog.
8It is recommended that Adjust Clock Periodically
be checked.
Adjust Clock Periodically is a function that
assures all EMnet stations are properly
synchronized in regard to when messages are sent
and received. It will adjust your computers
clock based on a highly accurate timestamp
embedded in the satellite heartbeat.
9Click here if your station is using a satellite
downlink
NOTE We highly recommend that EMnet stations use
satellite communication as well as TCP/IP to
maximize speed, efficiency, reliability, and
redundancy. However, if satellite communication
is not possible, your station may be configured
to use TCP/IP only.
or here if your station is using a TCP/IP-only
configuration.
10If a satellite feed is present
The Multicast Address and Port information will
be filled in automatically.
11If a satellite feed is present
The listen-on field will be grayed out and
automatically filled in with your IP address,
unless there are multiple network cards on the
computer.
If there are multiple network cards, the
pull-down will allow you to select the one on
which the computer can expect to find the
satellite receiver.
12If a satellite feed is present
Fill in the Receiver Address with the IP address
of the ethernet port on the satellite receiver.
13If there is no satellite feed present
Enter a time frequency for your computer to check
the server for new messages, between 30 seconds
and 15 minutes.
14Remote Alerter is an additional EMnet software
package that may be used to broadcast message
notifications to other computers on your network.
To configure the EMnet Receiver to work with
Romote Alerter, click here.
15This will open Remote Alerting Setup.
Click to enable remote alerting, and note the
subnet, multicast address, and port shown. To
run Remote Alerter, you will need to configure
Remote Alerter with those numbers.
Click OK.
16When you have selected whether the satellite
downlink is present, click Next.
17From this dialog, you can configure your
stations connection to the EMnet server.
Make sure this is checked if the computer has
internet access through the LAN, or through a
broadband Internet Service Provider.
Due to severely degraded reliability and
potentially long delays in getting and/or
answering emergency messages, We do not
recommend relying solely on a dialup connection
for EMnet!
18Select No Dialup if no modem exists, or if the
modem is not used for internet traffic.
19Select Specify Info Directly to supply gateway
information yourself.
Type in the phone number, user name, and password
here.
20Select Use Windows Dialup to use a predefined
windows dialup connection.
21Check Connect only as needed to hang up whenever
the communication task completes and the
connection is idle for 30 seconds OR, uncheck
it to remain connected, redialing only if the
current connection fails.
22It is not recommended, and should not be
necessary, to use a third-party mail server to
relay outgoing messages to the EMnet
server. However, if you are using a dialup
connection for EMnet, there is the potential that
a dialup ISP will block outbound SMTP traffic not
directed at their server.
You can avoid this issue by contacting Comlabs
Tech Support and configuring your computer to
access the server through nonstandard ports
or, if you prefer to relay messages through the
third-party mail server, you may enter a fully
qualified domain name or IP address here.
23If more than one TCP/IP gateway is defined, click
Gateways to build a list of additional gateways.
24This will bring up the Gateways dialog. Using
this dialog, you may build a list of gateways for
EMnet to use.
Hit OK.
Use Windows Defaults is automatically checked.
Leave this selected to use gateways already
defined as part of the Windows networking setup,
or uncheck it to add new gateways in the dialog
above.
25Selecting Finish causes all information to be
saved in an encrypted file. The EMnet Receiver
then initializes and places its satellite icon in
the system tray.
26View Configuration
You may view your configurations by
right-clicking on the satellite icon and
selecting View Configuration.
27The View Configuration dialog allows you to view
all of your existing settings, but does not allow
you to change them.
Unlike the Reconfigure Receiver dialog, opening
the View Configuration dialog will not interrupt
EMnet reception.
28About This Program
You can also find useful system information by
right-clicking on the satellite icon and
selecting About This Program.
