WE MISS YOU, TOBY!
As a distinguished professor, Tobys achievement
is not only reflected in the books hes written
and the articles hes published, but, more
importantly, the many lives that he has deeply
touched.
White River Rafting (Summer of 2000)
This picture was taken at the Sea World when
Toby, Lucy, Jian, and Eugene were in San Diego
for the Public Choice Conference in 2001. It was
the first experience for Jian and Eugene and the
second for Lucy to present in a conference. Toby
always encouraged graduate students to go to
conferences. This was one of the many meetings we
went together and as always, it was fun!
Lucy
In 2000, Toby took Lucy, Eugene, and Kai to white
water rafting. The picture was taken right before
the boat was about to flip Eugene was scared,
Lucy lost her paddle, and Toby was the only one
who remained calm, as he always did. The next
second, the boat was overturned, and all of us
were thrown into the rapids. Later, Toby showed
us a paper reporting three people were killed at
the place where our boat was overturned. Gee, he
is really a gutsy man, isnt he?!
Eugene
Toby had taught many of his students driving, but
he probably had a special memory about teaching
me. It took me three times to pass the road test
after I almost wracked all of Tobys garbage cans
to practice parallel parking. He showed me how to
be a patient yet persistent teacher, and taught
me to never give up on self. Yuqing
After the Commencement in May 1999, Toby patted
me on the shoulder and said "You are my buddy
now!" Toby had been a marvelous teacher and
guided me so tirelessly. He was a great buddy,
whom I wanted to meet again and again. Buddy, I
miss you so much!
Wenbo
Well, you think three times is a lot My record
is seven, and Toby drove me to all seven road
tests. I made every mistake one could possibly
imagine including forgetting my eye glasses.
Thank you, Toby, for all the kind help. Miss you
