Title: Test your problem solving skills'

1
Test your problem solving skills.

  • TSUNAMI

Thailand December 2004
Objective
You will be testing your ability in a variety of
skills by looking at images of the Thai tsunami
and tsunami data.
By the end of the lesson
You will all have assessed your performance in
the tested skills and will have some appreciation
of what happened in Thailand in December 2004.

What is behind the circle?

  • Look carefully at the next slide and decide what
    it is showing you.

Before and after tsunami.

How would you rate your problem solving skills?

I was able to figure out the bigger picture
quickly and I got the boat right, and I was able
to interpret the picture of before and after
tsunami correctly.
I was able to figure out the bigger picture and
I feel as though I made sensible suggestions
about the other two problems even if I didnt
necessarily get them both right.
I found solving the problems difficult and I
didnt think of answers straight away. I did have
my own ideas though, even if they were not the
correct ones.

Test your sequencing skills.
  • How good are you at putting things in their
    correct order?
  • Look at the pictures and decide which comes
    first, second, third and fourth.
  • You will have 2 sequences to solve.

How would you rate your sequencing skills?
  • I found both
sequencing activities easy and I was
  • able to put
the pictures in order quickly and
  • correctly.
  • I found both
activities fairly easy, although I had
  • to think
harder about the second one. I got most of
  • the pictures
    correct.
  • I found
sequencing very difficult and my brain had
  • to work very
hard. I found the first activity easier.
  • I got a few
    correct.

Test your Interpretation Skills.
  • You need to do the following
  • Create a timeline of killer tsunamis by
    organising them into date order.
  • Prioritise the tsunamis in terms of how many
people were killed and represent the information
in a graph, bar chart or table.
  • Calculate how many people have died in total as a
result of all the killer tsunamis.
  • Find out which part of the world has experienced
    the most tsunamis.
  • You have 25 mins to do this task.
  • You are about to see how well you can interpret
and organise information from a source.

You have a copy of this map with information on
about tsunamis that have occurred in our world.

How would you rate your interpretation skills?
I found organising the data quite easy and I was
able to work well on the task with little or no
help from others. I was able to calculate the
number of people killed by tsunamis in history
and identify which part of the world has had most
of them. I was a key contributor of ideas and
responses in my group.
I found organising the data a bit challenging but
I could cope with the majority of it. I did share
ideas and confirmed my own with other people. I
had to concentrate but I felt I contributed my
fair share to the task and I did understand what
was expected of me.
I found the task quite difficult and I could only
absorb some of the information because I found it
hard to organise the data in order. I was able to
see where the most tsunamis had taken place but I
dont think I contributed too much to the group
effort due to my problem with understanding.

Test your observation skills
  • You will be given 1 minute to study the picture
    on the following slide.
  • Then you will be asked 5 questions based on what
you have seen in the picture plus 1 tricky bonus
    question.
  • Will you get them all right?

How would you prioritise your use of skills
today?
  • We have used a number of skills in the lesson
today and you have rated your performance as we
have gone along, but what do you think you have
    done best at?
  • Look at the skills below and decide in what order
you would put them in terms of your success.
  • PROBLEM SOLVING
  • INTERPRETATION
  • TEAM WORK
  • SEQUENCING
  • OBSERVATION.
