Title: Sample Work Plan

Sample Work Plan
2
BBS and working alone The effects of a
self-monitoring package on the safe performance
of bus operators
  • Olson Austin (2001)

3
Background
  • Very few instances of self-monitoring in the
    safety literature
  • Safety management for lone workers represents a
    serious logistical problem
  • Self-observations often appear to be a weak
    treatment
  • No studies have evaluated the impact of S-M alone
    on work performance
  • This study was inspired by reading a report in
    Krauses 1998 book

4
Method
  • Ppts
  • 4 experienced bus operators
  • Resulted from a behavioral safety assessment
  • Previous efforts involved awards and penalties
  • 25 bonus for avoiding crashes for a quarter
  • 7 step progressive discipline system
  • Private investigators for drivers w/complaints
  • Yearly safety awards at a banquet
  • Infrequent performance reviews by dispatch
    supervisors

5
Method (2)
  • DVs
  • Complete stop
  • Stopping position
  • 2 sec motionless
  • Mirror checking
  • Self-monitoring estimations
  • Supervisor collected data
  • Design
  • Multiple baseline across behaviors, with
    supervisor ride-along probes
  • Observers rode the bus wearing headphones one or
    more loops around campus

6
Independent Variables
  • Kick-off meeting
  • Intro to BBS and rationale for the process
  • Intro to and rationale for s-m process
  • Ldrs signed a form promising no punishment from
    data collection
  • Self-monitoring
  • Completed forms 2x each day
  • Feedback
  • Graphs based on self-monitoring data each day
  • Supervisor prompts and observations
  • Prompted drivers to s-m
  • Rode on buses to conduct observations

7
IV Integrity
  • Self-monitoring
  • Counted s-m forms and calculated percentage
    completed
  • Feedback
  • Percentage of days each driver initialed the
    feedback graph
  • Supervisor prompts
  • Percentage of prompt recorded on supervisor
    recording form

Discussion
  • S-M produced a small effect in this case
  • Behaviors were continuous difficult to observe
    difficult to record
  • Small effects can have cumulative significance
  • E.g., 15 increase would result in 480 fewer at
risk mirror checks each month (374,400 fewer for
all drivers at the company, annually).
  • Problem with comparing s-m data and experimental
    data in this case?
