of view . . . climb into his skin and walk
    around in it (30).

Goals
  • Students will analyze how Jem and Scout grow in
their abilities to understand other people.
  • Students will analyze and evaluate how authors
    reveal characters in a text.
  • Students will apply the above processes to their
own experiences in a service learning project.

5
Creating a BLOG
  • Using a digital camera, students will post
pictures of 3 artifacts or objects symbolizing
who they are and what they believe is important
    in life.
  • In addition they will look at others BLOGS and
be prepared to introduce someone else to the
class based on the posted photos.
  • Teacher will model this process

In Groups . . .
  • Students will determine 3 objects that show who
Jem and Scout are or how they change throughout
    the novel
  • They will present their findings informally to
    the class.

A Similar Process
  • On Service Day Outings
  • Using digital and audio recorders, students will
    document appearances, surroundings, reactions,
and statements made by the people they encounter.
  • Photograph 3 objects that represent who the
people are and how they approach life.
  • Interview, observe, inquiredont evaluate

10
Synthesis
  • Post findings and reflections to BLOG
  • In small groups carefully view several BLOGS
  • Analyze and evaluate patterns that emerge in the
    processes of understanding other people.

11
Display
  • A group presentation detailing how you began to
    understand other people.
  • What were the barriers that existed at first?
  • How were those barriers surmounted?
  • How has it affected you?

12
Atticus was right.
  • One time he said you never really know a man
until you stand in his shoes and walk around in
them. Just standing on the Radley porch was
    enough (279).
