Project Vision
  • Commit to purchasing and using renewable energy.
  • 3 Major Aspects
  • The vision of the project was to create a
    renewable energy micro grid
  • Have the Borough purchase wind energy and
    committed to SMART Initiative
  • Explore energy efficiency projects that reduce
    consumption

What we did
  • Bought wind energy for 30 of our Borough
    accounts.
  • Convinced Delaware County Government to follow
    our lead and purchase wind energy for their
    borough owned properties.
  • Wrote an Energy Harvest Grant in 2002, for the
    start of the micro-grid project.

Key Aspects
  • Find a renewable energy expert/installer of solar
    energy systems.
  • Trust their review of the building potential.
  • Have realistic expectations of the project.
  • Commit to cost sharing at least 50 of the
    capital costs of the project.
  • Baseline the environmental benefits of the
    project.

Partner
  • Find a renewable energy partner that has
    experience in municipal government projects.
  • The partner should be able to do energy
    efficiency analysis for additional savings.
  • Let them do their analysis with minimal
    involvement.

Grant Writing
  • Clearly define your objective as a community.
  • Define commitments can you make and keep.
  • Clear concise grants that identify the
    environmental impacts like carbon emissions,
    number of cars taken off the road etc help the
    reviewers.

  • 1st Award 2003 15,925 for solar on 1 adaptive
    reuse building.
  • 2nd Award 2004 94,245 for 5 additional buildings
    and educational kiosk
  • 3rd Award 2006 77,000 for 3 additional buildings
  • Total grant funds received 320,000 for Solar
    Energy for Media Project

Environmental Benefits
  • Will reduce carbon emissions by 120,400 lbs per

  • Is the equivalent of planting 10 acres of mature
    trees annually.
