• North did not want slavery
• Taxes on goods from other countries (tariff)
• The south was losing political power
• South felt that they should be free from the

  laws
• They were afraid that Abraham Lincoln would not

  Constitution, a document similar to the United
  States Constitution, but it was for all the
  southern states

  citizens of Virginia did not agree with the rest
  of the state

  George B. McClellan during the was
• Flag Officer David Farragut led an assault up the
  Mississippi River. He was in command of New

  support and help pay for their families because
