Uranus
  • By Abbey Cahill

2
How did Uranus get its name?
  • At first Uranus was named "Georgium Sidus",
after George III. Other people called the planet
Herschel, in honor of the man who discovered it.
One astronomer suggested the name Uranus, an
ancient Greek god who was the father of Saturn,
so that the new planet would have a name from
mythology like the rest of the planets. The name
Uranus was finally agreed on by everybody in the
    mid 1800's.

3
The Size of Uranus
  • Uranus is about four times the size of Earth but
much smaller than Saturn and Jupiter. Uranus is
51800 kilometers in diameter. Its mass is about
fourteen times the mass of earth which is 5.98 x
    1024 kg.
  • Uranus is much bigger than Earth but
  • appears extremely small when compared to
Jupiter, which is over 142800 kilometers. in
    diameter!

4
Distance from the sun
  • Uranus has an average of a 2.87 billion kilometer
    distance from the sun.
  • It is the seventh planet from the Sun and has its
spin axis almost in the plane of its orbit about
the Sun. This produces unusual seasons and also
causes unique magnetic and electric field
    structures.

5
Time it takes for Uranuss rotation and
revolution.
  • A day on Uranus is 17.9 earth hours. This period
of time is also defined as how long in takes for
Uranus to rotate once on its access.
  • Uranuss year is 84 earth years long! Wow! It
takes 84 earth years to orbit one full circle
    around the sun.

6
What is Uranuss atmosphere made of?
  • Uranuss atmosphere is about 83 hydrogen, 15
helium, and 2 methane. (Methane gives Uranus its
    unusual color.)

7
What is Uranus made of?
Uranus is composed of mostly rock and various
ices. With about 15 hydrogen and little helium.
Uranuss layers appear to blend together. its
atmosphere is about 83 hydrogen, 15 helium, and
2 methane. (Methane gives Uranus its unusual
color.)

Physical Features
  • Uranus looks like a green-blue light from earth.
Methane causes Uranus to have this color.
  • Uranus also has fifteen orbiting moons, all
named after story characters from authors like
    Shakespeare.
  • All of Uranus's inner moons appear to be
roughly half water ice and half rock. The
composition of the moons outside the orbit of
Oberon remains unknown, but they are likely
    captured asteroids.

Uranuss Discovery
  • Uranus was accidentally discovered by William
    Herschel in 1781.
  • Herschel was a music teacher who named the
    planet its first name,

Georgium Sidus
10
Latest info gained from space probe
  • The latest information gained on Uranus was found
by the Voyager 2, the only space probe ever to
visit Uranus. The voyager 2 collected the
information that a day on Uranus is !7 hours and
fourteen minutes long. The closest approach to
Uranus occurred on January 24, 1986. Voyager 2
discovered 10 previously unknown moons studied
the planet's unique atmosphere, caused by its
    axial tilt of 97.77

11
Uranus and its year and gravity.
On Uranus, one year is equivalent to 84.01 years
on earth. So on earth, if someone is eighty-four
years old, they would only be one on
Uranus. Uranus has a stronger force of gravity.
If someone on earth ways 65 pounds, they would
weigh 71 pounds on Uranus.
12
Fun Facts about Uranus!
Uranus is the size of four earths!
It spins on a horizontal axis!
Uranus rotates on its side, so half the time one
pole is toward the sun and then the other is,
making each of the four seasons last about 20
years!
