    keeping abreast of technological advancements
  • This unit will be done in lieu of current
    Outcome project which is a poster of technology
    application poster

Objectives
  • Students will understand what Nanotechnology is
  • Students will identify an application of
    nanotechnology and share highlights with their
    class
  • Students will be able to describe both positive
    and negative impacts of nanotechnology on society

Lesson Day 1
  • Anticipatory Set
  • Have you seen an IPod Nano? What does Nano or
    Nanotechnology mean?
  • Discuss student answers
  • Review Highlights of Dr. Yury Gogotsis
    Nanotechnology Presentation (from RET)
  • Assign Homework (next slide)
  • Find a newspaper or magazine article about a
    current or future Nanotechnology application.

Nanotechnology Application
  • Write a 2 paragraph summary of article
  • Article must be written 2006, 2005 or 2004
  • Attach the article so I can verify the content,
    date, and check for original writing
  • Highlight and define three words in the article
    to strengthen vocabulary as you go
  • Use your best writing (spelling counts) in the
    required two paragraphs.

  • Due Date Following Monday

Lesson Day 2
  • Anticipatory set Can you think of a potential
    negative impact on society of Nanotechnology?
  • Lesson Have students get into groups of 4 to
    share their ideas.
  • Groups discuss ideas, build on them and review 2
    potential negative impacts with class.
  • Have larger class discuss these ideas.
  • Show 12 minute video Soldier of Future

  • Students stand and present 1-2 min review of
    application they researched
  • Assessment What did you learn about
    nanotechnology? next page

End of Unit Assessment
  • Answer these questions
  • How big is a nanometer?
  • How many nanometers thick is a penny?
  • Write down a definition of Nanotechnology
  • Describe something in nature that happens on the
    nano scale
  • What is one exciting application for
    nanotechnology?
  • Come up with one idea for nanotechnology that has
    not been reviewed in class. Be creative!
