GEORGE WASHINGTON BECOMES THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF
THE UNITED STATES
  • Gets elected in 1789
  • Main goal was to establish a firm society in the
    midst of a war
  • Created a tax system, as well as a banking system
  • Was awarded the very first Congressional National
    Medal
  • Lived until 1799
  • Was succeeded by his vice-president John Adams

BILL OF RIGHTS RATIFIED
  • Ratified in 1791
  • (to confirm by expressing consent, approval, or
formal sanction to ratify a constitutional
    amendment.-DICTIONARY.COM)
  • The Bill of Rights is the first 10 commandments
    in the United States Constitution
  • Thomas Jefferson was a main component of the
writing of the constitution, and the Bill of
    Rights

4
THE XYZ AFFAIR
  • President John Adams appoints Charles Pinckney to
be the minister to France to try and ease
    tensions between the two.
  • The French government sent three agents to meet
with Pinckney, and once at the meetings, instead
of working out an agreement of peace, France
simply asked for 250,000 as a bribe and 10
    million dollars as a loan.
  • Outraged, Punckney filed a report to John
Adamsand congress, replacing the agents names
    with X, Y and Z.
  • This brought on an undeclared naval war between
    the two countries.
  • Finally, at the next meeting the countries agreed
on a treaty, the treaty of Morfontaine, in 1800

5
Lewis and Clark Expedition
  • In 1803 President Thomas Jefferson bought the
Louisiana region from France in the famous
    Louisiana Purchase
  • Once the united states had gained this territory,
Jefferson appointed Meriwether Lewis and William
Clark to further explore territory in the west,
as well as try to find a link between the
Columbia and Missouri rivers, that would link the
Missouri river to the Pacific ocean.
  • Lewis and Clark returned with knowledge of the
area, as well as an inefficient route to the
Pacific ocean, which enabled many future
explorers and immigrants to make their way
westward, further expanding the United States.
