2Moose habitat
? This is good moose habitat.Areas with small
trees that provide foodare next to older forests
where moose canhide or avoid wind, deep snow,
and hot sun.
Moose feed on plants that grow in marshesand
shallow lakes. Moose do not like hot
weather, and a dip in a pond helps keep them
cool. ?
3Their Food
The moose has favorite foods that it actively
seeks out. Moose have four stomach chambers and
like to eat willow, aspen, birch, underwater
plants, and garden vegetables. The moose above is
on the Anne Wien Elementary School grounds
feeding on small landscaping bushes and young
willow trees. Willow is the preferred food of
moose and they don't eat spruce. If a moose finds
your garden, he or she might return and eat your
vegetables every year!
This
moose is nibbling on the tender parts of a choke
cherry tree in a Fairbanks neighborhood.
4Predators of the Moose
The moose has three main predators bears,
wolves, and humans. Moose are the biggest member
of the deer family and are the goal of hunters in
the far north. Smaller bears (black) will go for
smaller moose and larger bears (grizzly) will go
for bigger moose. Wolves will go for the sicker,
weaker moose. There has even been a report of a
killer whale attacking and eating a swimming
moose.
