Finished Product
11
Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Solar - Air/Photovoltaic Heating System
  • Components
  • Fabrication
  • Testing

12
Solar Air System
  • How the system works
  • Heat collected in 4 X 8 solar air panel.
  • Hot Air is blown onto the rocks by fan,
    circulated back through panel.
  • When fan is reversed, heat is removed from rocks,
blown into building, circulated through rock
    storage bin.
  • Air movement controlled by backdraft-dampers.
  • Whole system is powered by a PV System.

13
Heating System
14
Heating System Components
  • Air Solar Panel.
  • Rock bin and pad.
  • Fan Tube.
  • Heating Ducts.
  • Dampers.
  • Registers.

15
Components (Cont.)
  • PV Panel.
  • Charge Controller.
  • Batteries.
  • Power Inverter.
  • Lighting.
  • Control Panel.

16
Fabrication
  • SOLAR PANEL
  • STORAGE BIN
  • PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM

17
Air Solar Panel
  • 4x16 panel donated by Rick Ragulsky.
  • Chopped to 4x 8
  • Best insulation retained and re-used
  • Support frame cut and rewelded
  • New heat collector made
  • Air disruptors and divider installed
  • Painted with heat resistant black paint

18
Solar panel fabrication continued
  • Glazing found, fit, and cleaned
  • Panel and heat collector joined
  • Ducting installed
  • Duct sections installed in panel, sealed, and
    painted
  • Support frame and panel sealed
  • Assembled and moved to site

19
ROCK STORAGE BIN
  • 30 by 10 drainage culvert donated by CDOT
  • Culvert cut to 65
  • Inside wire brushed, and sealed
  • Culvert trimmed to 62
  • Expanded metal grid cut to 30 diameter

20
Rock bin fabrication continued
  • Updraft tube box
  • Culvert base plate
  • HVAC fan Tube
  • Culvert cap
  • Temporary culvert cap

21
PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM
  • Battery box
  • To house two, 6 vdc batteries
  • Panel supports
  • for PV panel

22
TESTING
  • Solar Panel
  • Panel pressure tested
  • Heat tested
  • Modifications after testing
  • Weather strip and insulation baking
  • Rock Bin
