Political System in Ancient Greece
  • Democracythe people choose their leaders
  • In Sparta, the practice Oligarchy. This means
    they had two kings. They needed this because
    they were a military society.

Leaders
  • Men were the leaders. They were the ones who
    made the laws and rules.
  • The council of elders were the ones who could
    vote.

Laws
  • In Sparta, boys of age 7 were sent off to
    military school until they were 60 years old. At
    that time they could decide to stay or go.
  • In Athens, only the boys could go to school and
    the girls had to stay home.

How Laws Were Enforced
  • In Sparta, the laws were enforced by the King.
  • In Athens, the laws were enforced by the Council.

Punishment
  • In Athens, if people broke the law they were
    turned into slaves. If they owned land and were
    in debt, they would lose their land to pay of
    debt.
  • In Sparta, if one of the citizens breaks a law
    they would no longer be a citizen and they would
    get harsh punishment.

Religion and Government
  • Women could not leave the house. If they had to
    go somewhere they had to be with their
    brother-in-law or husband.
  • Women had to wear clothes when they went outside.
  • Greeks also believed in many gods.
