Why project was selected
  • We selected this project because we wanted to
improve the options in health care for Patagonia.

3
Who were our sources?
  • Dr. Gonzales/ Family Physician at Family Health
    Center
  • Fred Sang/ Licensed contractor
  • Jim Maloney/ Firefighter with Fry Fire Department
  • Kathy Barney/ Radiologist at St. Josephs
    Hospital
  • EMTs Jim Coleman, Denise Wales, and Dianne
Isakson from the Patagonia Volunteer Fire
    Department.
  • School nurse Cornelia OConner

Comments and opinions
  • Dr. Gonzales thought that it would of help to the
clinic to bring in another doctor, an X-ray
machine, a Medical Records Clerk, an RN, and more
    space to work with.
  • The students thought it would be a good idea to
have an ambulance on call 24 hours a day in
Patagonia. However, after a thorough analysis,
the class abandoned this aspect of the project
because the cost exceeded the potential benefits.

5
Fred Sang
  • Mr. Sang provided us with a quote on the cost of
    additions to the building.

6
Jim Maloney
  • Mr. Maloney gave information on costs of the
ambulance and other medical supplies that the
ambulance carries, as well as the price charged
    per patient per call.

7
Kathy Barney
  • Ms. Barney gave us information on the process of
taking X-rays and the various costs involved. She
also estimated how many people from this area go
    to Nogales to get X-rays.

8
Denise Wales
  • Ms. Wales gave us information on the number of
ambulance calls per month in the Patagonia area
and recommended that we provide ambulance service
    in Patagonia.

9
Jim Coleman
  • Mr. Coleman gave us very important information
when our Business Law class first presented our
project. He reminded us that the town has First
Responders that have a healthy response time and
that the money spent on ambulance services could
    be better used else where.

10
Project Components
  • Purchase of X-ray machine and hiring of X-ray
technician to provide X-ray services in Patagonia
    to refer patients.
  • The hiring of a Medical Records Clerk, a
Registered Nurse, and Nurse Practitioner. The
objective of hiring more staff is to expand the
clinic hours and enable the clinic to be open at
lunch time to increase appointment availability
    and reduce waiting time.

11
Cost of Expansion
  • Changes to building 18,000
  • Cost of X-ray machine 20,000
  • Cost of additional personnel including benefits
    for one year 207,485
  • Costs exclude office supplies, medical supplies,
    furniture, and additional insurance.

Grants
  • Net income assuming clinic receives grant for
    start up costs is 31,368.00
  • A grant of 40,000 would be necessary to proceed
with this project. Without this grant, the
clinic would not have the upfront money to
purchase new equipment and make modifications to
    the building.

21
Conclusion
  • In our opinion we think that this would be a
great addition for the community, but without a
grant, we would not be able to begin making
profits because of the initial cost of the
equipment. If we could get a grant for
approximately 40,000, then the expansion would
    be well worth pursuing.

22
Results of Latest Meeting with Dr. Gonzales
  • He suggested we revise the following assumptions
  • Number of X-rays
  • Number of office visits
  • Use of building expansion
  • New staff hours
  • Billing
  • We feel that when we re-run the model with the
new data then the project may no longer be
    viable.

23
A Greater Concern
  • Due to the fact that insurance companies
reimburse the clinic at such a low rate, it is
hard for the clinic to survive.
  • Currently, government medical care program pays
    more than private insurance companies.
  • Only the working poor pay full cost.
