Who was he?
  • Thomas Paine was an American revolution writer.
    Hes considered to be a revolutionary radical
    liberal writer of his time. He was the author of
    the famous history book, Common Sense, which led
    many people to give faith in the American
    Revolution.
  • Hes been given the title of The Father of the
    American Revolution due to his support and work
    for the freedom from Great Britain.

  • He died on June 8th 1809, in New York city
  • His final resting place is in New Rochelle, New
    York.

Paines Family
  • On September 27, 1759, Paine married Mary Lambert
  • His wife became pregnant, and, following a move
    to Margate, went into early labor and died along
    with her child
  • On 26 March 1771, at age 34, he married his
    landlord's daughter, Elizabeth Ollive
  • Due to him moving to America with the
    recommendation of Benjamin Franklin, the two
    signed a separation agreement

  • Paines trip across sea to America nearly lead
    Paine to death. The drinking water on board
    killed five passengers of typhoid fever. Although
    Paine did make the trip he was too ill to leave
    his cabin when he arrived in Philadelphia. When
    Benjamin Franklins physician arrived, he had to
    carry Paine away.

  • In the first two months of Common Sense, 120,000
    copies were sold in the colonies
  • At the time there was only a population of 2
    million in the colonies
  • Total sales in both England and the colonies at
    the time reached 500,000 copies.
  • It was the best selling work, with the exception
    of the bible, at the time.

  • Plain Truth was written by James Chalmers
    called Paine a Political Quack.
  • Chalmers later served as a commander in the

National Assembly of France
  • When he wrote Rights of Man, it inspired
    Enlightenment of France which lead the French
    Revolution. Although he could not speak French,
    he was elected into the Nation Assembly of
    France. Although later due to the leader
    believing he was a alley of the Girondists, he
    was thrown in jail.

Paine vs. Napoleon
  • Paine remained in France during the Napoleonic
    era. Paine, as a freedomist, hated Napoleons
    move towards dictatorship and called him The
    completest charlatan that ever existed..
    Although he stayed in France, he later went back
    to America on the invitation of Thomas Jefferson.

Coming (back) to America
  • Due to the dictatorship happening in Europe,
    Paine was invited back to America by Thomas
    Jefferson in 1802. In seven years he would later
    die a long lived life.

A Founding Father
  • Thomas Paine is one of the greatest persuasive
    writers of all time. Hes very straight to the
    point, and has changed the minds of over millions
    in leading towards enlightenment and freedoms. He
    considered not only starting the French
    Revolution but also giving the support of the
    American Revolution to win our freedoms.
