  • Ethnicity is an identity with a group of people
    who share cultural traditions of a particular
    hearth
  • Ethnicity is different from race
  • Race is biological, ethnicity is cultural
  • The conflict between local diversity and
    globalization is an element of ethnicity
  • Multiculturalism is also part of current ethnic
    patterns

American Ethnicity
  • Due to widespread migration throughout American
    history America has many different ethnic groups
  • Ethnic groups tend to have distinct migration
    patterns and areas of settlement
  • Ethnic groups tend to also end up in major urban
    areas

African American Migration Patterns Slavery
  • Between 1710-1810 10m African slaves brought to
    the Western Hemisphere
  • Slaves were brought to the American South
    beginning in 1619 for production of cash crops
    such as cotton and tobacco
  • Importation ends in 1808, slavery ends in 1865
    with the defeat of the Confederacy after the
    Civil War
