Are We Artists?
3
How do some artists express themselves?
Roy Lichtenstein
  • He was a prominent American pop artist, whose
work borrowed heavily from popular advertising
and comic book styles, which he himself described
as being as artificial as possible.

How can art help us to discover ourselves? Roy
Lichtenstein
  • Lichtenstein was interested in portraying a sort
    of anti-sensibility that pervades society."
  • I want my painting to look as if it had been
    programmed," he explained.

Are We Poets?

Maya Angelou
  • Victim of an abusive childhood. Resulting in her
    not speaking for years.
  • Her poetry centers on themes of self-discovery
    and family.
  • She appeals to a broad audience, but is also
concerned with conveying the difficulties of
    being black woman in America.
  • I Know Why the Cage Bird Sings, is the title
poem of her five volume autobiography
  • Angelou wrote this autobiography for several
reasons one was as a reminder not to give in
during the trials of growing up. Angelou has
said, "somebody needs to tell young people,
listen, I did this and I did that. You may
encounter many defeats, but you must not be
    defeated."

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
  •   A free bird leaps on the back of the wind
and floats downstream till the current ends and
dips his wing in the orange suns rays and
  • dares to claim the sky. But a bird that
stalks down his narrow cage can seldom see
through his bars of rage his wings are clipped
and his feet are tied so
  • he opens his throat to sing. The caged
bird sings with a fearful trill of things
unknown but longed for still and his tune is
heard on the distant hill for the caged bird
    sings of freedom.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings - cont.
  •  The free bird thinks of another breeze and
the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own. But a caged bird
stands on the grave of dreams his shadow shouts
on a nightmare scream his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of
things unknown but longed for still and his tune
is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird
    sings of freedom.
