5The DITD Process
- What Format is Preferable?
- Town Hall Meeting Legislator or regulator
presents to your group and then engages in an
informal Q A. - State Capital Advocacy Day State Council
arranges for multiple chapters to go to the state
capitol to meet with legislators or regulators in
their respective offices. - Chapter Meeting Invite a legislator or local
regulator to present at and observe one of your
chapter meetings. - District office meeting a small group of members
visit the local district office of your state or
federal legislator. - Political Campaign Volunteer You volunteer on
the election campaign of a candidate for state or
federal office.

- Identify Your Legislator
Contact the SHRM Government Affairs staff or call
your Office of the Secretary of State to
determine who your state and/or federal
legislators are. - Contact Your Legislators Local Office Arrange
for the meeting at your selected venue and
confirm the legislators availability. - Create an agenda for the event Highlight
how the meeting will proceed and assign roles to
those participating in the event.

- Choose issue topics for the DITD Decide
what issues you want to discuss and familiarize
yourself with the topic(s). (Keep it to 2 or 3
issues max) - Create a One-Page Leave Behind
Craft a one-pager which highlights SHRM and the
issues that you will be addressing. This
document should be left behind after each
meeting. (For a sample one-page leave behind
contact the SHRM Governmental Affairs Dept.) - Present yourself as an expert
Offer your knowledge and expertise as an HR
professional to the legislator and/or their staff
on the issues addressed.

While meeting with a Legislator and/or their
staff, remember to
- Introduce SHRM and those represented by SHRM
- Explain how the proposed legislation affects you,
your employees and your organization - Make it personal tell your STORY
- After meeting, thank them for their time, give
them the one-page leave behind and your
business card

- Follow Up
- After the meeting email, call and/or fax a thank
you note which reiterates the topic areas
covered during the meeting - Share your findings with fellow chapter and state
council members - Provide feedback to the SHRM Governmental Affairs
staff and consider sharing information with other
state councils/state chapters (Best Practices)
