Title: The Kingdom preached

1
The Kingdom preached
  • The disciples had just been sent out and the
Kingdom message was to Jews only.
  • Mat 105 Jesus sent out these twelve, instructing
them as follows Do not go to Gentile regions
and do not enter any Samaritan town. 106 Go
instead to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
107 As you go, preach this message The kingdom
    of heaven is near!

John the Baptist is revealed
  • Mat 117 While they were going away, Jesus began
to speak to the crowd about John What did you
go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken
by the wind? 118 What did you go out to see? A
man dressed in fancy clothes? Look, those who
wear fancy clothes are in the homes of kings!
119 What did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes,
I tell you, and more than a prophet. 1110 This
is the one about whom it is written
  • Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
  • who will prepare your way before you.

3
  • Mat 1114 And if you are willing to accept it, he
is Elijah, who is to come. 1115 The one who has
ears had better listen! 1116 To what should I
compare this generation? They are like children
sitting in the marketplaces who call out to one
another, 1117 We played the flute for you, yet
you did not dance we wailed in mourning, yet you
did not weep.1118 For John came neither eating
nor drinking, and they say, He has a demon!
1119 The Son of Man came eating and drinking,
and they say, Look at him, a glutton and a
drunk, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!
But wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.

Israels rejection and judgments
  • Mat 1120 Then Jesus began to criticize openly
the cities in which he had done many of his
miracles, because they did not repent. 1121 Woe
to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the
miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and
Sidon, they would have repented long ago in
sackcloth and ashes. 1122 But I tell you, it
will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the
day of judgment than for you! 1123 And you,
Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you
will be thrown down to Hades! For if the miracles
done among you had been done in Sodom, it would
have continued to this day. 1124 But I tell you,
it will be more bearable for the region of Sodom
on the day of judgment than for you!

  • Mat 1213 Then he said to the man, Stretch out
your hand. He stretched it out and it was
restored, as healthy as the other. 1214 But the
Pharisees went out and plotted against him, as to
    how they could assassinate him.
  • 1222 Then they brought to him a demon-possessed
man who was blind and mute. Jesus healed him so
that he could speak and see. 1223 All the crowds
were amazed and said, Could this one be the Son
of David? 1224 But when the Pharisees heard
this they said, He does not cast out demons
except by the power of Beelzebul, the ruler of
    demons!

6
  • Mat 1354 Then he came to his hometown and began
to teach the people in their synagogue. They were
astonished and said, Where did this man get such
wisdom and miraculous powers? 1355 Isnt this
the carpenters son? Isnt his mother named Mary?
And arent his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and
Judas? 1356 And arent all his sisters here with
us? Where did he get all this? 1357 And so they
took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, A
prophet is not without honor except in his
hometown and in his own house. 1358 And he did
not do many miracles there because of their
    unbelief.

  • Mat 148 Instructed by her mother, she said,
Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a
platter. 149 Although it grieved the king,
because of his oath and the dinner guests he
commanded it to be given. 1410 So he sent and
had John beheaded in the prison. 1411 His head
was brought on a platter and given to the girl,
and she brought it to her mother. 1412 Then
Johns disciples came and took the body and
buried it and went and told Jesus.

8
  • Mat 157 Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly
about you when he said, 158 This people honors
    me with their lips,
  • but their heart is far from me, 159 and they
worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines the
    commandments of men.
  • 1514 Leave them! They are blind guides. If
someone who is blind leads another who is blind,
both will fall into a pit.

A glimpse into grace
  • Mat1613 When Jesus came to the area of Caesarea
Philippi, he asked his disciples, Who do people
say that the Son of Man is? 1614 They answered,
Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and
others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. 1615 He
said to them, But who do you say that I am?
1616 Simon Peter answered, You are the Christ,
the Son of the living God. 1617 And Jesus
answered him, You are blessed, Simon son of
Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal
this to you, but my Father in heaven! 1618 And I
tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I
will build my church, and the gates of Hades will
not overpower it. 1619 I will give you the keys
of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on
earth will have been bound in heaven, and
whatever you release on earth will have been
released in heaven. 1620 Then he instructed his
disciples not to tell anyone that he was the
    Christ.

10
  • Mat 1621 From that time on Jesus began to show
his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and
suffer many things at the hands of the elders,
chief priests, and experts in the law, and be
killed, and on the third day be raised. 1622 So
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him
God forbid, Lord! This must not happen to you!
1623 But he turned and said to Peter, Get
behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to
me, because you are not setting your mind on
    Gods interests, but on mans.

11
  • Mat 2128 What do you think? A man had two sons.
He went to the first and said, Son, go and work
in the vineyard today. 2129 The boy answered,
I will not. But later he had a change of heart
and went. 2130 The father went to the other son
and said the same thing. This boy answered, I
will, sir, but did not go. 2131 Which of the
two did his fathers will? They said, The
first. Jesus said to them, I tell you the
truth, tax collectors and prostitutes will go
ahead of you into the kingdom of God! 2132 For
John came to you in the way of righteousness, and
you did not believe him. But the tax collectors
and prostitutes did believe. Although you saw
this, you did not later change your minds and
    believe him.

12
  • Mat 2337 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill
the prophets and stone those who are sent to you!
How often I have longed to gather your children
together as a hen gathers her chicks under her
wings, but you would have none of it! 2338 Look,
your house is left to you desolate! 2339 For I
tell you, you will not see me from now until you
say, Blessed is the one who comes in the name of
    the Lord!

13
  • Mat 241 Now as Jesus was going out of the temple
courts and walking away, his disciples came to
show him the temple buildings. 242 And he said
to them, Do you see all these things? I tell you
the truth, not one stone will be left on another.
    All will be torn down!

14
Did they get it?
  • John 1915 Then they shouted out, Away with him!
Away with him! Crucify him! Pilate asked, Shall
I crucify your king? The high priests replied,
We have no king except Caesar! 1916 Then
Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.
  • 1919 Pilate also had a notice written and
fastened to the cross, which read Jesus the
Nazarene, the king of the Jews. 1920 Thus many
of the Jewish residents of Jerusalem read this
notice, because the place where Jesus was
crucified was near the city, and the notice was
written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek. 1921 Then
the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Do
not write, The king of the Jews, but rather,
This man said, I am king of the Jews. 1922
Pilate answered, What I have written, I have
    written.

15
  • Acts 16 So when they had gathered together, they
began to ask him, Lord, is this the time when
you are restoring the kingdom to Israel? 17 He
told them, You are not permitted to know the
times or periods that the Father has set by his
    own authority.

16
  • John 2421 But we had hoped that he was the one
who was going to redeem Israel. Not only this,
but it is now the third day since these things
happened. 2422 Furthermore, some women of our
group amazed us. They were at the tomb early this
morning, 2423 and when they did not find his
body, they came back and said they had seen a
vision of angels, who said he was alive.
