INTRO TO PALLADIUM
  • Discovered by William Hyde Wollaston, a chemist
    from Britain, in 1803.
  • He obtained samples of palladium from South
    America.
  • Palladium is usually found among platinum,
nickel, copper, silver, and gold deposits, which
    is how Wollaston found it.
  • Name is derived from the asteroid Pallas and the
    Greek goddess of wisdom.

HISTORY
  • Discovered by William Hyde Wollaston
  • Discovered in 1801
  • Discovered when he was attempting to obtain pure
    samples of platinum
  • Discovered in England

USES FOR PALLADIUM
  • Palladium is used to make the following
  • Springs for watches
  • Used alongside gears and the like in watches.
  • Surgical instruments
  • Used to strengthen surgical instruments.
  • Electrical contacts
  • Dental fillings and crowns
  • Used to fill cavities, etc.
  • Sometimes acts as a catalyst used in
    hydrogenation and dehydrogenation.
  • Used to purify hydrogen (see next slide)
  • Utilized to make jewelry ex. White gold

FUN FACTS
  • Hydrogen passes through palladium easily, which
allows for the easy purification of hydrogen.
  • Palladium dichloride (PdCl2), a palladium
compound, can absorb large amounts of carbon
monoxide (CO) gas, and is crucial in carbon
    monoxide detectors.
  • Palladium is also very soft.

ISOLATION
  • Palladium is available commercially, hence it is
not necessary to fabricate it in a lab.
  • Isolation of Palladium is complex because it
could be found in ores containing platinum and
    other metals.
  • Treatment of the ore with aqua regia ? solution
containing gold and platinum ? gold then removed
    with iron chloride ?

7
ISOLATION
  • (cont.) Platinum precipitated out as (NH4)2PtCl6
    upon treatment with NH4Cl, leaving H2PdCl4 ?
Palladium precipitated out by treatment with
ammonium hydroxide and HCl ? This yields
    palladium per method of burning.
