2
Beliefs and religions
  • Apaches tribes thought that the first woman and
man came from the surface of the earth. They also
thought that spirits could harm them and helped
    them.

3
Artifacts
  • Apache tribes used buffalo hides for clothes and
shoes called moccasins. They also made baskets to
store water and cradle boards to carry their
    babies.

4
environments
  • Apache tribes had environments like
  • Deserts
  • Mesas
  • Treeless
  • Little rainfall
  • Very hot summers
  • Very cold winters

5
Past location and current location
  • The apaches land covered an area from central
Texas to central Arizona. It was also from
southern Colorado to the Sierra Mountains in New
    Mexico
  • Today they live in New Mexico, Oklahoma, and
    Arizona

6
Homes
  • Most Apache lived in Wickiups
  • Made from leaves, grass, sticks and animal skins.
  • Wickiups are round.
  • Few lived in teepees made from animal skin

7
The Hunt
  • The Apache hunted many animals like deer,
    rabbits, and turkey
  • They also gathered fruits, nuts, plants, and honey

8
Men Women
  • Apache men spend most of their time hunting
deer, antelope, elk, and occasionally, buffalo.
  • The women of the tribe built homes called
    wickiups.

9
children
  • Did you know that apache children gathered wild
plants, fruits, and vegetables. The yucca and
mescal plants were important to their diet. In
summer they gathered wild onions, strawberries,
    raspberries, grapes, and cherries.

10
Meeting the Spanish people
  • The apache people learned many things from the
Spanish. By 1680 the Spanish had established
communities all along the Rio Grande River in
what is now New Mexico. From the Spanish the
apache people acquired horses, sheep, other
    animals.

Famous Apache
  • Geronimo was in 1829. His apache name was
Goyokla. It means one who yawns. The Mexicans
gave him the name Geronimo. He was known as a
fierce fighter. When the Mexicans saw him
    charging they yelled Geronimo.

Apache Today
  • Did you know that most apaches still live on
reservations. There are approximately two hundred
thousand apaches living on reservations in the
    southwest.
