Title: Waste to Energy

1
Waste to Energy
Environmentally Safe Waste Disposal that
generates renewable and valuable energy sources
Steam ? Electricity
2
  • Parent Company to Montenay Inc.
  • Worlds second largest Waste Services Company
  • 71,000 employees in 34 countries
  • Burnaby incinerator is one of three Waste to
Energy Plants in North America, the others are in
    Pennsylvania and Miami

3
Waste-to-Energy Facility (WTEF)
  • Built in 1988
  • Serves the Greater Vancouver Regional Districts
    (GVRD)
  • WTEF burns about 20 of GVRD Garbage
  • ISO 14001 certified

4
EverydayIns Outs
  • 720 tonnes of garbage
  • 6 tonnes of lime (to control acid gas emission)
  • 50 megawatt-hours of electricity
  • 270 KG of ammonia (to control NOx emissions)
  • 120 KG of activated carbon (to control mercury
    emissions)
  • 1500 KG of phosphoric acid (added to stabilize
leachable metals in the fly ash)
  • 960 tonnes of steam sold to nearby paper plant
  • 360 megawatt-hours of electricity
  • 120 tonnes of bottom ash (used in road building
    and landfill cover)
  • 25 tonnes of fly ash (disposed at landfill)
  • 20 tonnes of scrap metal (recycled into
    reinforcing steel)

5
THE PROCESS
6
Looking UP ? Looking DOWN ?
Mountains of Garbage About 80 trucks a day haul
garbage collected in the GVRD to the 4,000 tonnes
refuse bunker. Completely contained within the
plant, no odours can escape.
7
  • Controlled by one or two men the Garbage is mixed
an lifted into the feed chutes.
  • Each of the 3 lines burn 10 tonnes of garbage an
    hour.
  • Garbage moves down the grate where it burns at
temps of more than 1000 Celsius

8
  • Bottom ash amounts to about 17 per cent of the
waste that comes into the plant.
  • Metal is removed and recycled
  • The remaining ash is used as an aggregate for
    building roads

9
  • Heat and gases pass into the boiler area where
they heat tubes filled with water.
  • Water become steam in a process that cools the
    gases.
  • These gases are then sent to the air pollution
    control system
  • Gases are treated to remove acids, metals and
    particulate matter.
  • Every process is carefully monitored by the
    control room

10
Cleaned gases are discharged through the 60 meter
high stack A portion of the steam produced is
sold to a paper mill that recycles paper products
to produce cardboard The steam produced is sent
to a turbo generator to create electricity for
sale to the BC Hydro electrical grid
