• Seeks new forms outside of tradition
• Attempts to provoke the viewer

• After WWII the historical Avant Garde (Futurism,
  Dada, Surrealism) became popular
• Once against the institution, it was now becoming
  institutionalized
• Culture appropriates itself continually
