Searching

What can you find on the Internet?
  • What cant you find on the Internet?
  • Most businesses today have a web presence that
informs consumers about the business, and usually
provides services like online shopping, business
hours and find a location near you

8
What can you find on the Internet?
  • The Web offers new ways to interact with other
people, and connect people with similar
interests. Ex. chat rooms, email or
    Classmates.com.
  • You can do business without leaving home. Ex.
Banking, groceries, or buying a used car.
  • There are unlimited ways to use the Internet, and
new ones are created all of the time.

9
The Internet as a Reference Tool
  • With a few keywords and a little experience, you
can find an almost inexhaustible wealth of
    information on the Net.
  • You can use Google the way you would use an
    encyclopedia, dictionary, history book, etc.

10
The Internet as a Reference Tool
  • Please note that for school assignments, all
    sites are not created equal.
  • Sites with the extension .org, .gov, or .edu are
considered more scholarly than those with the
    .com extension.

11
The Internet as a Reference Tool
  • .org is used for non-profit organizations
  • .gov is used for government sites
  • .edu is used for educational entities such as
    colleges
  • .com is reserved for businesses, usually have an
agenda, and are generally not considered
    reputable sources of information.

12
Surfing
  • Surfing the Internet refers to a pleasurable
pastime of following link to link, getting a
little lost, but discovering a bit of what is out
    there, online.

13
Shopping
  • You can go to most chain stores with their URL,
select items, put them in a shopping cart, and
check out using a credit card.
  • My favorite online stores are www.levenger.com,
    and www.sundancecatalog.com

14
Shopping
  • Popular shopping sites include
  • www.amazon.com

15
Banking
  • Online banking makes it possible to do almost any
    transaction over the Net.
  • Additionally, using the routing number and
account number found on the bottom of checks from
a checkbook, you can buy things online without a
    credit card.
  • You can also pay bills online.

16
Job Hunting
  • Sites like Monster.com or CareerBuilder.com claim
to be good tools for finding a job.
  • I disagree. The volume of people, their resumes
and the companies looking for workers make it
practically impossible for the sites to work well.

17
Job Hunting
  • Instead, try using local sites such as Worcester
    Works or Boston Works or,
  • Search for jobs within your field through a
professional organization. For example, as a
librarian, I can search through professional
organizations such as the Massachusetts Library
    Association

18
Driving Directions
  • Services such as Yahoo! Maps and MapQuest are
pretty reliable for getting you from point A to
    point B
  • They also include the time it is estimated to go
    that route.

19
Online Magazines
  • Many magazines also have a web presence.
  • There are a few sites which require you to
subscribe, but for the most part, you can access
    the magazines articles for free.
  • Some examples Better Homes and Gardens
    www.bhg.com, and The Economist www.economist.com

20
WORKSHOP TASK
  • What else is out there?
  • GIVE ME A TOPIC

21
Search strategies what is a keyword?
  • A keyword is usually a generic term that covers
    the scope of your topic.
  • Instead of using Adolescents and Driving, using
Teens and Driving will bring up more hits
(results) because the word teen is used more
often in conversation and in print than the word
    adolescent

22
WORKSHOP TASK
  • KEYWORDS

23
Why should I use Google?
  • In the beginning there were many competing search
engines, using many different methods to retrieve
    relevant information from the Internet.
  • In time, the Google search engine developed its
technique of fetching results by popularity.

24
Why should I use Google?
  • This technique brought such good results, it is
now considered just a waste of time to consult
    more than one search engine.

25
WORKSHOP TASKS
  • Sample Searches

26
Saving and Printing
27
Saving Info from the Net
  • You can highlight the URL,
  • Copy Ctrl C
  • or Cut Ctrl X
  • and Paste Ctrl V the URL into a new document

28
Saving Info from the Net
  • Ctrl C, Ctrl X, or Ctrl V refer to the
action of holding down the Control key while also
pressing the C, X or V key on your keyboard.

29
Saving Info from the Net
  • You can also copy and paste any of the content of
any web site into a different document.
  • I usually paste into a Word document, and then
    re-format.

30
Printing Web Pages
  • To print a webpage, first select Print Preview
from the File Menu, and make sure you have chosen
the correct area you wish to print.
  • Then select Print from the File Menu, choose the
    correct printer, and hit OK.
