Title: Egypt

1
Egypt
  • Tourist Destinations

2
Pyramids
  • There are over 20 pyramids in Egypt, the largest
rising higher than 140 meters above ground.
These large structures were built to serve as
tombs of kings. There are three main pyramid
areas in Egypt every visitor should see the
    Giza, Saqqara, and Dahshur.

3
Ancient Temples
  • The main city for visiting Egypts fantastic
temples is Luxor. There are several temples in
the area, including the Temple of Luxor, Temple
of Amun, and Temple of Khonsu, Temple of Opet,
    and many more.

4
Tombs
  • Because Egyptians placed so much emphasis on
death and the importance of the after life, there
are many, many large tombs other than the
Pyramids that are worth visiting. One area near
Luxor, called Valley of the Kings, has 62 tombs
    open to tourists.

5
The Citadel
  • The Citadel was for 700 years the strategic
stronghold for Cairo (one of Egypts major
cities), overlooking the city, and easy to
defend. It was first occupied in 810 by the
governor, who built his Dome of the Wind
Pavilion. But it was first in 1176 that Saladin
turned it into a fortress, much inspired by the
fortresses of Syria and Palestine, used by the
    armies during the Crusades.

6
Mosques and Churches
  • There are several Mosques and Churches in Egypt
worth visiting simply because of their amazing
architecture. Two examples include the Muhammad
Ali Mosque and the Hanging Church

7
The National Museum
  • The National Museum could be worth a holiday by
itself. The museum (its official name is Museum
of Egyptian Antiquities) holds some of the finest
treasures of human history, and is filled far
beyond the capacity of the 100 year old building.
There are as much as 136,000 items exhibited.
40,000 more lie in the basement.

8
The Red Sea
  • The beaches of the Red Sea are an exquisite gift
of nature. The sea with its crystal clear blue
waters, offers colorful corals and rare marine
life. The long chain of mountains, with their
different colors, run parallel to the coastline,
separated from the sea only by a plain, most of
    which is suitable for camping.

9
The Sphinx
  • The Sphinx is 20 meters high and 60 meters long.
The dimensions of the face are so large that the
eyes themselves are 2 meters high.

10
The Nile River
  • The Nile River, the longest river in the world,
serves as a gateway to many of Egypts main
attractions. Many tourists take advantage of the
many luxurious cruises when visiting Egypt,
stopping at major attractions on their way down
    the Nile.
