Title: PAINTING PICTURES THROUGH POETRY

1
PAINTING PICTURES THROUGH POETRY
Create a multimedia poetry presentation
using Kid Pix Deluxe. The following is a
step-by-step guide for creating a multimedia
presentation.
2
TEACHING POETY USING KID PIX DELUXE
This activity is a great follow-up activity
for reinforcing rhyming words and doing
additional word work with word families. COLOR
PATTERN POEM (for kindergarten/first grade) I
like (color). I like (color) (noun--a thing). I
like (color) (another thing that rhymes with
the thing on the previous line). Repeat the
above pattern again. For example I like
yellow. I like yellow ducks. I like yellow
trucks. Repeat the above poetry pattern with
another color. COLOR PATTERN POEM (for
first/second grade) I like (color). I like
(adjective) (color) (thing). I like (adjective)
(color) (another thing which rhymes with the
thing on the previous line). Repeat the
above pattern four times. For example I like
green. I like big green bugs. I like cold green
mugs. Repeat the above poetry pattern with
three more colors.
3
THE PICKER (Main Menu)
Wacky TV - an on-screen digital movie player with
built-in special effects.
Kid Pix - a drawing palette for making pictures
using easy-to-use tools.
Slide Show - an organizer tool for creating
multimedia presentations.
Moopies - (short for moving pictures) a program
for creating animated pictures.
Stampinator - a drawing palette for making
pictures, backgrounds and stamps that move across
the page.
Digital Puppets - a tool to add digital puppets
to a project. Digital puppets are controlled
by various keys on the keyboard.
4
STARTING THE PROJECT
1. Select the Kid Pix program from the main
menu (picker screen).
5
Wacky Pencil - Draw free-form lines. Line - Draw
straight lines. Rectangle - Draw rectangles with
various patterns. Oval - Draw ovals with various
patterns. Wacky Brush - Paint with spirals,
bugs, pyramids and other wacky brushes. Paint
Can - Fill an area with colors and fun

Stamps - Stamp letters, numbers and punctuation
marks. Typewriter - Type text. Rubber Stamps -
Add colorful stamps to a picture. Moving Van -

picture. Eyedropper - Select a color from a
picture. Undo Guy- Undo the last thing you

6
1. Create a background color for the screen by
first selecting the Paint Can button. To do
this, move the cursor over the Paint Can and
click the left mouse button. 2. Select a color
from the Color Palette. (A solid, pale color
works great as a background and does not detract
from the content of the screen.) To do
this, move the cursor over the color you want to
choose and click the left mouse button. There
are several background patterns to choose from.
Use caution when selecting a background pattern.
It may not be possible to easily change your
choice later. A solid-color background is always
easily changed.
7
1. When a color is selected in the Color
Palette, it is shown in the box at the top of
the palette. 2. Move the cursor into the drawing
area. You will notice that the cursor will
change into a paint can when the cursor is
positioned over the drawing area. 3. Click the
left mouse button once to paste the paint color.
8
1. Type the text of the poem by first selecting
the Typewriter button. 2. Select the font,
size and style of text from the Text Options
tray. (Use the arrow up and arrow down buttons
to scroll through the available fonts and sizes,
or double-click the font or size windows to bring
up a selection window.) 3. Select the text
color from the Color Palette. 4. Move the
cursor into the drawing area to the point where
the text will begin. Click the left mouse button
once. 5. Type the text.
9
1. Resize or reshape a text window by clicking on
a red corner dot and dragging it until the box
is bigger/smaller and is the desired
shape. Note You can always change the text
later by clicking on it.
10
1. To add text of a different font, size, style
or color, move the mouse to a new area on the
screen and click the left mouse button once.
2. Select the new font, size or style from the
Text Options tray. 3. Select the text color
from the Color Palette. 4. Type the
text. Note The boxes around the text will
disappear when you no longer have the
Typewriter button selected. If you want a box
around the text, you need to draw one using the
Rectangle tool.
11
1. Add pictures (known as stamps) to the page
by first selecting the Rubber Stamps
button. 2. Choose a stamp from the Options
Tray from the stamp category currently selected.
3. Use the scroll arrows to scan through the
eight rows of pictures found in each category.
12
1. To access other stamp categories, select the
Goodies option from the top menu
bar. 2. Next, select Pick a Stamp Set from the
drop down menu which appears when you select
Goodies.
13
1. Select a stamp category by moving the cursor
on top of it and clicking the left mouse
button. 2. Use the arrow up and arrow down keys
to scroll through the available
stamp categories. There are 24 categories from
which to choose. 3. Click the ltOKgt button to
make your stamp category selection and return
to the drawing palette.
14
1. Select the desired stamp by moving the cursor
over it and pressing the left mouse
button. 2. Move the cursor to the spot on the
drawing palette where you want the stamp placed
and click the left mouse button. Note To make a
stamp larger, change its size by pressing the
ltControlgt or ltControlgt ltShiftgt keys together
if using a PC, or ltShiftgt, ltOptiongt or ltShiftgt
ltOptiongt in using a Apple. Keep the extra keys
depressed until you have placed the stamp in
the desired location and have clicked the left
mouse button.
15
1. Continue selecting and placing stamps on your
drawing palette until you have completed the
Title Page of the poem.
16
1. Save your work by moving the cursor to the top
menu bar and clicking on File. 2. Next,
select Save a Picture... from the drop down
menu which appears when you select File.
17
1. Enter a file name for the first page (Title
Page) of your project. 2. Click the ltOKgt
button. Note Consider the naming convention you
will use for each page. Every page saved in
KidPix must have a unique name. If many students
are creating pages, you need to give them
rules to follow so one students work is not
saved over anothers, causing the first
students work to be lost. A suggested
naming convention is as follows the students
initials (use all three it is unlikely
that two students in a class will have all
three initials the same), three characters
to denote the project (cpp stands for Color
Pattern Poem), and the page number (use 01 for
page 1, 02 for page 2, 10 for page 10, etc.
putting a 0 in front of page numbers less
than 9 will make it easier to sequence
your pages when you import them into the
SlideShow later).
18
1. Clear your drawing palette so you can create
the next page by moving your cursor to the top
menu bar and clicking on File. 2. Next, select
New from the drop down menu which appears when
you select File.
19
1. Repeat the process to create the second page
of your project (i.e., the first poetry page
after the Title Page).
20
1. To create a drawing of a pond, select the
Wacky Pencil tool. 2. Select the thickness
and style of the line from the Tool Options
tray. 3. Select the color from the Color
Palette. (Use the scroll arrow keys to access
the various 112 colors.)
21
1. Move the cursor into the drawing area. You
will notice that the cursor will change into a
pencil when the cursor is positioned over the
drawing area. 3. Click the left mouse button and
hold it down while drawing. (Notice the shape
is closed. This is important. When I dump the
water color from the Paint Can, I want only
the interior of the pond to change color.)
22
1. You can add stamps to the drawing. Remember,
you need to move your cursor to the Rubber
Stamp button and click the left mouse button in
order for the stamps to appear in the
Options Tray. You can also get other stamps by
selecting Goodies from the top menu bar, then
Pick a Stamp Set
23
1. Use the Eyedropper to match a color that
already exists in the drawing. For example, to
fill the pond with the same color water as the
ducks are swimming in (pasted from the Rubber
Stamp), move the cursor over the Eyedropper
button and click the left mouse button. 2. Once
the Eyedropper has been selected, move the
cursor on the drawing palette. The cursor will
change into a picture of an eyedropper. Move
the eyedropper so its tip is on top of the color
you want to match. 3. Click the left mouse
button once. You will notice that the Color
Box on top of the Color Palette has changed
to the color you are trying to match.
24
1. Next, select the Paint Can button by moving
the cursor on top of it and clicking the left
mouse button. 2. Move the cursor into the middle
of the pond. The cursor will change into
a paint can when the cursor is positioned over
the drawing area. 3. Click the left mouse button
once to paste the paint color.
25
1. Complete the drawing so it fully illustrates
the text of the poem.
26
1. Save your work by moving the cursor to the top
menu bar and clicking on File. 2. Next,
select Save a Picture... from the drop down
menu which appears when you select File.
27
1. Enter a file name for the second page of your
project. 2. Click the ltOKgt button.
28
1. Create a new blank page (select File, then
New). Repeat the process to to create the
third page of your project.
29
1. Enter a file name for the third page of your
project. 2. Click the ltOKgt button.
30
1. Once your work has been saved, exit the
program by moving the cursor to the to menu bar
and clicking on File. 2. Next, select Return
to Picker from the drop down menu which

move the cursor to the picture of the desired
transition effect and click the left mouse
button. 2. Click on the ltSelectgt button to save
the transition effect.
44
1. Notice the Pick a Transition option has
color (i.e., is no longer black
and white). 2. Repeat the procedure (i.e.,
