Title: Adaptive Computing at HIIT

1
Adaptive Computing at HIIT
  • ADAMOS Seminar, Oulu, 15.6.2007
  • Senior researcher, doc. Patrik Floréen, HIIT

2
HIIT
  • Helsinki Institute for Information Technology
HIIT is a joint research institute of University
of Helsinki and Helsinki University of Technology
    TKK founded in 1999
  • It consists since 2002 of the Basic Research Unit
(BRU) and the Advanced Research Unit (ARU)
  • According to the approved strategy of HIIT, the
units will be merged by the end of 2008
  • The research is now unified across BRU and ARU
    into four programmes
  • Operations in Kumpula, Tapiola and Otaniemi

3
Research programmes
  • Algorithmic Data Analysis (ADA) Data analysis
methods for other sciences and for industry
through both basic research in CS and applied
work on problems arising from applications
  • Future Internet (FI) Internet infrastructure for
    efficient, secure and trusted always-on
    connectivity and services
  • Network Society (NS) Human-centric
    multidisciplinary anticipation and development of
    ubiquitous information and communication
    technology
  • Probabilistic Adaptive Systems (PAS)
    Sophisticated probabilistic models and their
applications for solving problems appearing in
    complex real-world stochastic systems

Ubiquitous computing at HIIT
  • Ubicomp is studied in many research groups of
    HIIT
  • Middleware, security, trust in the Future
    Internet programme
  • Interaction and media research in the Network
    Society programme
  • Context-awareness and sensor networks in our
    research group Adaptive Computing
  • We have collaboration throughout HIIT, but in
particular with UIx in NS and CoSCo in PAS

6
Adaptive Computing group
  • Our group conducts research on modelling and
    optimisation in resource-constrained distributed
    environments
  • Our work concentrates on
  • data analysis, probabilistic modelling and
    component-based development for mobile
    context-aware systems
  • ad hoc and sensor networks
  • Collaboration with industry important
