The rain forest of the world are some of the
"richest" places on earth. An average 50 to 260
inches of rainfalls yearly in the rain
forest. The temperature in a rainforest rarely
gets higher than 93 degrees F. Rain forests now
cover a little more than 6 of earth's
surface. Rain forests produce 4 of earths
oxygen. About 1/4 of all the medicines we use
come from rain forest plants. Almost all of rain
forests are close to the equator. So that is why
it is so hot! There are unique animals in the
rain forests. A few are described in this book.

There are 4 layers of the rainforest. Emergent,
canopy, understory and forest floor. The tall
trees in the emergent layer are 200 feet
tall. Animals like monkeys, eagles, bats and
butterflies live there. The canopy is like a big
roof. The trees fill in together to make a
roof. The understory and forest floor receive
sunlight because of the tall trees. A lot of the
animals live in the understory. No plants live in
the forest floor because of the dark, wet area.

Sloths live in trees. They like to hang upside
down. They eat leaves and fruit. Sometimes sloths
live to be 20 years old. They sleep 15 hours a
day. Sloths have a thick brown fur coat and are
about the size of a cat. The sloth is the slowest
mammal on earth.

Jaguars live in rainforests in South and Central
America. They are endangered because rainforests
are being cut down. Jaguars are four to six feet
long. They are the largest animals in the
Americas. Jaguars are nocturnal animals that hunt
at night. A jaguar eats reptiles, birds, and
alligators. Jaguars love to climb trees and
swim. They can be yellow or black in color with
black spots.

The Ocelot hunts in the night. They are good
swimmers, but they spend their time on land. They
love to run fast. They hunt in the rain forest
for meat. They look like large cats.

The Giant Anteater is a mammal that lives on the
forest floors of South and Central Americas. This
is good because it walks on its knuckles and has
poor eye sight. It is an insectivore, which means
it eats bugs. It has a tube-shaped mouth, a bushy
tail, small eyes, and long curved claws.

Gorillas have hair all over their bodies, except
for their hands, face, armpits, and bottom of
their feet. They can climb trees without falling
to the ground. Gorillas can eat weird things that
humans can't eat, such as termites and ants. They
mostly eat plants. Their arms are longer than
their legs. Gorillas use their front knuckles to
walk. These apes are shy, big, and quiet animals.
12
Back to Menu
Mandrills live in western Africa in Cameroon and
the Congo. They have a large muscular body. They
have brown fur. Mandrill eat plants and insects
and sometimes they eat lizards and
snakes. Mandrills sleep in trees.
13

Lemurs can stand on 2 feet. It lives in
Madagascar and it climbs trees with its hands and
feet. It's eyes are wide. Lemurs climbs forest
trees with its paws. A Lemur's back is as big as
a kid. Its tail is big.
14

The Howler Monkey lives in Brazil. The only
animal louder than it is the Blue Whale. The
Howler Monkey eats fruits. It uses it's tail as a
third leg. The monkey lives in the under story of
the rain forest. Howler Monkeys are brown and
black. They grow up to be 4 feet tall.
15

Leopards love to climb trees. There are five
types of leopards. Leopards will drag their prey
up to high places in trees to eat. Leopards give
birth to up 4 cubs. Leopards are found in
Saharan, Africa. These cats are good swimmers and
excellent tree climbers. Leopards mostly hunt at
night. Leopards live up to 21 years. These
graceful, medium-sized cats are 3.5 - 5.5 feet
long.

Okapis like to eat leaves, fruit and
berries. Okapis do not chew their food. They eat
it in one big bite. The Okapi has a long tongue
and can lick his own eyelids. An Okapi is like a
Zebra. He has stripes on his legs. They do not
have long necks. An Okapi is about 5 feet
tall. They live for 15 to 20 years. The Okapi
live in the Congo River Basin in Central
Africa. He can be found on the forest floor.

Tarsiers eat a lot of insects, lizards, worms,
and other small animals. They sleep in the thick
tangles of the under story layer of the
rainforest. They are found in the Southeast Asia
forests, in the Philippines and
Indonesia. Tarsiers mostly spend their whole
lives in trees. They are nocturnal
creatures. They are carnivores and mammals,
too. Tarsiers are 3 inches tall and they have big
eyes and a long tail. Tarsiers can't move their
eyes, but can twist their head like an owl. They
can sleep and give birth clinging to a tree
trunk.

Scarlet Macaws live in the canopy and the
emergent layer. Macaws eat fruit, nuts, and
berries. Macaws spend most of their time
flying. Macaws live together. These birds come in
all colors of red, blue, green, and
yellow. Macaws build their nest in the high
trees. Macaws are nice birds.

A toucan eats fruit, frogs, and insects. There ar
40 different kinds of toucans. A toucans's bill
is sharp. Toucans make holes in trees to make
their homes. When they sleep toucans turn their
bill under their wings. Their colorful bill may
be black, brown, blue, green, red, white, yellow
and any combination. They have short and thick
necks. Toucans are very important to the rain
forest because they help disperse seeds from the
fruits and berries they eat.

Harpy eagles live in South America. They lay 1-2
eggs and build a large nest for their eggs. They
eat monkeys and other birds. Their eggs take
53-58 days to hatch. When they open their wings
they are about 6 feet wide. They make a whistling
and clicking noise. Their nails are very long.

Iguanas eat leaves, flowers, fruits, and other
animals. They are killed by some animals and
people. They change colors from green to
brown. They use their powerful legs to swim and
climb trees. These animals have a life span of
about 15-20 years. Green iguanas tend to live
alone. They love to spend most of their time
soaking up the sun in the canopy.

Back to Menu
The Poison Arrow Frog lives in the forest floor
and under story layers of the rain forest. They
often live in South America. These frogs eat
flies, beetles, and ants. Their bright colors
warn predators that they are poisonous. Poison
Arrow Frogs spend their lives near water.

Did you know Red-Eyed Tree Frogs can also have
orange eyes. They don't always have to be
red? Red-Eyed Tree Frogs sleep during day time
and are awake at night. This is why they have red
eyes, so they can see good at night. Red-Eyed
Tree Frogs are meat eaters. They eat
insects. Red-Eyed Tree Frogs live in the rain
forest. They can be found on the forest floor or
under story of the rain forest.

Anacondas are about 20 feet long. They are
different colors of green and brown. Anacondas
live on the forest floor of the rain forests in
South America. they eat birds, pigs, deer, and
fish. This snakes kills its food by
squeezing. They are meat eaters. Anacondas get
mad very easily.

The Morpho Butterfly lives in the canopy layer of
the rain forest and rarely comes near the
ground. They can be found in Brazil. The Morpho
has a brown body and dark veins. It is known for
its bright blue wings. The Morpho Butterfly
drinks the juices off rotting fruit.

There are fires because they cut down trees. Now
animals have diseases from the people moving into
the area. About 50 plants, animals, and insects
become extinct each day because of the
destruction of the rainforest. We need to protect
our rainforests.
