  • 1) Melo was born in New York City on May 29,
1984. After living in New York, Melo and his
family settled in Baltimore when he was 8 years
old. Anthony attended high school at basketball
powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in Virginia and was
named a high school All-American. Coming out of
high school, Melo was one of the most highly
touted prospects. He would go on to live up to
the hype during his brief stint at Syracuse
    University.
  • 2) Despite staying only one year at Syracuse,
Melo is considered by many to be one of the most
memorable college basketball players in NCAA
history. As a freshman, he averaged 22.2 points
(16th in the nation, 4th in the Big East) and
10.0 rebounds in leading the Orangemen to their
first ever NCAA Mens Basketball championship in
2003. He led the team in scoring, rebounding,
minutes played, field goals made and attempted
and free throws made and attempted. Melo also
earned the NCAA Tournament's Final Four MVP
honorshis efforts included a 33 point explosion
against Texas in the semi-final, and a solid 20
points and 10 rebounds in the final victory over
the University of Kansas. Having already
accomplished everything he set out to do in his
collegiate career, Melo decided to declare for
the 2003 NBA Draft where he was chosen 3rd by the
    Denver Nuggets.

  • 3) In his first year as a pro, Melo averaged 21
points per game and led the Nuggets to one of the
biggest turnarounds in NBA history, transforming
a previously uncompetitive team into a playoff
contender. Melos talent and leadership did not
go unnoticed as he was chosen as a member of the
2004 USA Olympic basketball team after just one
    NBA season.
  • 4) Since his rookie Campaign, Melo has only
gotten better, averaging over 20 points per game
in his second year and 26.5 points per game (8th
overall in scoring in the league) this past
season. Besides being a scoring machine, Melo has
acquired a reputation for being a tremendous
performer in the clutch. During the time period
from the beginning of the 2003-04 season to the
end of the 2005-06 season, he hit 11 out of 17
game-winning shots, by far the most of any player
in the NBA. Following the 2005-06 season, Melo
was rewarded for carrying the Nuggets into the
playoffs by being named to the All NBA Third
    Team.
  • 5) In the summer of 2006, Melo was chosen as
captain of Team USA. He has been a standout
performer for the US team thus far, including
breaking the US scoring record in a game with 35
points against Italy in the FIBA tournament
    earlier this summer.

Narrative assessment of process
  • In my opinion the PRABST system biased on my
research is that the system is closely accurate
but should not be used to rank players because
there is no control variable they all have
different years in the league and nothing is the
same for all of the players. The first problem
that I had come across was that the younger
players in the league that have not played as
many years and are not as old have much higher
PRABST scores because they have not been in the
league as long as the more veteran players. The
younger players also have higher scores because
they have not had bad seasons and also they have
not been injured yet resulting in a low
statistical season giving them a much higher
score because they are fresh. Also the younger
players have much higher scores because they are
much younger and most of the younger players like
James, Melo, and Garnett came out of high school
and are very fresh and strong and have no
injuries. There are also many individual
players that have very low scores but are amazing
players that I believe should be ranked much
higher. Steve Nash who on my PRABST system
ranking is 21 out of 25 but for the last 2
years has been named MVP of the league and leads
the Phoenix Suns every game in assists. Another
player that is ranked much lower then I believe
that he should be is Yao Ming who leads the
Huston Rockets every game in points and rebounds
and turned around a dead team and turned them
into playoff contenders. Yao is ranked on my
PRABST system as being 25 of 25 which is far
off of what he should be. Also the scores from
Yaos China career were not added in so he had a
couple great years in China that were not counted
into the ranking of the PRABSAT system. The
players with average rebounds per game and
average assists per game meaning over 5 assist
per game had the highest scores because there
assist per games doubled by the system giving
them many more points then the players with lower
assist scores. Also the players who were point
guards who handle the ball more had more
turnovers then other players who dont handle the
ball as much like Steve Nash whose scores were
effected greatly by the turnover rule of
multiplying by 2 but he also had the most assist
per game then any of the other players. My player
Carmelo Anthony was ranked 4th on the system
which is a good rank if he keeps up his averages
for a couple more years. The reason he was so
high in the system was because he has not played
in the league many years and also because he has
not been injured yet giving him an advantage over
many of the other players. My final opinion is
that the PRABST system is not a very accurate
ranking of the players because it lacks controls
that give certain players more advantages over
the other players creating debate in scores of
certain players leaving the rankings not accurate
to show Whos the best? player in the NBA.
