2Personal Qualities
- Sensitivity - Candidates should have a deep,
sympathetic understanding of people and their
needs. - Maturity - Prospective missionaries must
demonstrate spiritual, emotional and intellectual
maturity through - The ability to adapt to new conditions and
relationships. - A respect for duly constituted authority.
- Submission to authority. Candidates must certify
their willingness to follow the spirit and policy
of the mission as outlined in this Handbook. - A loyalty to one's home church, mission and
associates. - A willingness to receive counsel and constructive
criticism. - A humble willingness to serve under both foreign
and national leadership. - A gentle readiness in helping leadership and
co-workers grow in all areas of life and
ministry. - A sense of humor reflecting optimism rather than
pessimism. - A cooperative spirit that makes possible
effective team participation. - Christian tolerance consistent with sound
convictions. - Patience and perseverance under sustained trials.
- Language aptitude. Except in cases of
appointments to English-speaking ministries,
candidates must show the ability to learn a new
language.

3Spiritual Qualities
Conversion - Basic to all other considerations,
there must be definite evidence of a personal
experience of salvation through faith in Jesus
Christ. His lordship must be recognized in every
aspect of life and service. Character - The
candidate's life must clearly demonstrate the
qualities of an elder or deaconess. Persons
suited to this high calling must be skillful in
managing their own households, be able in
teaching, and in the oversight of the church (1
Tim. 31-7 Titus 15-9). Numerous other traits
accompany this high office, such as temperance,
dignity, hospitality and gentleness. Conviction
- There must be the certainty of divine direction
in choosing missionary service in obedience to
the Great Commission. This conviction will be
motivated by a genuine love and concern for the
lost souls of people. In addition, there must be
evidence of some spiritual gift equipping the
individual for Christian service. (See 1 Pet.
410,11 Rom. 12 1 Cor. 12 and 14 Eph. 411-16
1 Tim. 412-16 2 Tim. 16,7.) Biblical
Authority - Essential is the acceptance of the
authority, inerrancy and trustworthiness of the
Scriptures and a willingness to subscribe to OC's
Statement of Faith. Biblical Knowledge -
Candidates for ministry with OC must have a
thorough knowledge and appreciation of the
teaching of the Word of God. Of special concern
is the nature and ministry of the church as the
Body of Christ, coupled with a sincere desire to
minister to the visible church both at home and
overseas. Good Taste - Matters of personal
appearance, conduct and habits must be subject
to, and regulated by, scriptural standards.
Proven Ministry - OC is looking for individuals
with experience in Christian ministry which shows
evidence of God's blessing. Dependence on God -
Missionary service is a venture of faith, and OC
personnel must be people of faith. The candidate
must demonstrate complete dependence on God for
guidance, finances, ministry and the supply of
personal needs. Home Church Support - The
candidate must have an unconditional endorsement
of affirmation from his/her home church.

4Physical and Psychological Reqs
Thorough physical examinations must show the
candidate to have a strong, healthy body. Dental
examinations are required before departure to the
field, but are not a requirement for acceptance.
Thorough testing, using standard psychological
devices, must show evidence of social, emotional
and mental stability.
