- We further internationalized the curriculum at
VCU in innovative ways at every level, from
general education to graduate programs, and
gained visibility for the quality of our
programs.
4Faculty Awards
- Cinzia Corubolo received the Distinguished
Adjunct Award from the College of Humanities and
Sciences. - Paul Dvorak received the Foreign Language
Association of Virginia Outstanding Teacher
(College) Award.
5Teaching Achievements
- During the 2006-2007 academic year, The School of
World Studies saw a 10 increase in the number of
graduates over the previous year to 115.

15Grants Awarded Related to Teaching
- Paul Dvorak begins the fourth year of a contract
with the Virginia Department of Education to
support hosting the Governors Summer Foreign
Language Academies A Global Village. - Five Student Engagement grants were awarded to
World Studies faculty.
16Grants Awarded Related to Teaching
- Mark Wood co-directs a three-year grant from the
Metanexus Institute (15,000) to support a series
of public forums on topics related to Faith and
Life Sciences. - Jérôme Cornette and Julián Gutiérrez submitted a
US Department of Education Title VI proposal to
support new programs in World Film Studies.
17Student engagement
- The Advising Office improved services to students
through the recruitment of a great advising team,
an internship coordinator and an events
coordinator. - We established a new position of Coordinator of
Advising to continue improving our growing
services.

- World Studies faculty are active and productive
scholars in their fields as demonstrated by the

- We made progress in attracting increased funding
support through higher visibility, greater
enrollments and external sources.
42World Studies visibility events
- Expressing Life through Poetry, organized by
Elizabeth Kissling, Eugenia Muñoz and Anita
Nadal, this event in the VCU Student Commons
attended by over 70 students and community
members. - The 3nd Annual VCU Arabic Film Festival. The
Grace Street Theatre hosted six films to capacity
crowds over a two-day period. Salwa Sheibany
served as faculty advisor. (co-sponsored with
the VCU Honors College and the Office for
International Education)

- The Life Sciences and Religion Forum Series. Mark
Wood co-founded and directs this series which
this year included participation by several SWS
faculty members.

- The 12th Annual World Studies Student Research
Conference. Virginia Casanova organized our
largest and best attended conference to date,
including special exhibits and over 150 students
presenting on twenty-nine panels organized and
chaired by VCU faculty.

- The 4rd Annual VCU Grace Street Festival. VCU
students, staff and faculty joined with local
merchants to fill the 900-block of Grace Street
with music, food and approximately 1,000 people
in celebration of the many cultures and
traditions from around the world that have found
a home in Richmond.

- The 15th Annual French Film Festival. Festival
directors Peter Kirkpatrick and Françoise
Ravaux-Kirkpatrick oversaw the largest and
best-attended festival to date.

- The Office of Language and Cultural Competence
was established, and is now collaborating with
community organizations such as the Red Cross,
and the Center for Health Disparities on the
Medical Center campus.

- World Studies Alumni were individually invited to
a record number of events last year, culminating
with the Alumni Terrace Reception.

- Further develop Study Abroad programs and their
incorporation into our curricula. - World Studies participate in a record-breaking
twelve summer programs, including Austria (2),
France (2), Guatemala (2), Italy, Mexico, Peru,
Puerto Rico, Russia and Spain.

- Further develop Study Abroad programs and their
incorporation into our curricula. - Development has begun of VCU semester programs
with our partner universities in Córdoba (spring
08) and Guadalajara (fall 08).

International Students and integrate them more
fully into our programs. - SWS faculty taught in a summer residential
program for students from Fudan, and helped
develop a similar program for students from

Technology. - hosted Dr. Nadia El-Kholy, Fulbright
Scholar-in-Residence.

- Seek ways to increase research leave for SWS
faculty as College faculty leave plan goes into
effect. - We instituted the Research and Strategic
Initiative Support program to provide course
releases to help faculty advance research
projects.

faculty research. - Significant progress was made on the development
of graduate programs proposals.

12th Annual World Studies Student Research
Conference, Nov 16-17, 2006, moderated by over a
dozen World Studies faculty members.

- Further develop interdisciplinary initiatives
among faculty. - Jérôme Cornette and Julián Daniel Gutiérrez
submitted a Department of Education Title VI
grant proposal to support development of
interdisciplinary programs in World Film Studies.

- Take advantage of broader VCU initiatives with
which SWS can dovetail, such as Film and Media
Studies and Public Policy and Administration. - Increase recruitment of Research Assistants and
Teaching Assistants. - Develop International Internships to strengthen
graduate programs.

- Focus on writing and critical thinking
skills-building for our students - World Studies will contribute to three important
areas in the revised General Education Program
Global and Diverse Communities, Literature and
Civilization, and Foreign Language.

- Better integrate Adjunct Instructors into our
operations. - Last year we initiated a greatly enhanced series
of support services for adjunct instructors,
including orientation sessions, handbook
information, and more centralized recruitment,
hiring and scheduling.

- Take more advantage of increasing local diversity
allowing community-engagement to strengthen our
research, teaching and service missions. - Last year we placed a record number of student
interns, and debuted an internship in local K-12
classrooms with large LEP populations.
