  • April 1-5
  • Chair submits list to Dean of faculty who must be
    considered for tenure and those who may be
    considered for promotion
  • Meet with Chair and PAC to discuss criteria and
    procedures for preparing dossier
  • Identify outside reviewers and solicit letters
  • External letters are due to department by Oct. 1
  • April 1- August 14
  • Faculty Prepare dossiers

Candidates Responsibility
  • Promotion and tenure candidates have the ultimate
    responsibility of making sure all required
    materials are available and complete and that the
    dossier has been prepared according to CAS
    guidelines
  • External letters, recommendations of the
    department Chair and PTC are added after dossier
    is submitted to Chair
  • Candidates will not view dossiers once they have
    been submitted to departments

  • Vital part of dossier
  • Makes case for excellence in scholarship/creative
    activities, teaching and service
  • Provides context and coherence
  • Emphasizes quality and significance of work
  • Paper/book/performance reviews, rankings of
    journals or exhibitions, extensive publications,
    citation indices, reputation of coauthors
  • Confirms coherent sustainable professional
    program that has contributed to the advancement
    of the candidates field

  • Broader significance of the expertise
  • Discussion of teaching activities

Summary of Teaching Effectiveness
  • Comprehensive evidence of teaching excellence is
    required
  • The summary of teaching activities and
    evaluation must reflect a systematic appraisal of
    teaching effectiveness and performance
  • Summary should indicate the candidates ranking
    among all faculty in the department, ranking
    among faculty within the same cohort and can
    include rankings within various types of courses
  • Typical students comments can be included within
    the summary to document overall teaching
    effectiveness
  • Purpose is to summarize and interpret teaching
    effectiveness
  • Copies of student comments and survey results
    should not be included

Summary of Annual Performance
  • Cumulative results of the candidates annual
    evaluations prepared by the chair
  • Chair summarizes results of annual evaluations
  • Provide context by discussing how the candidate
    ranks with respect to other faculty and their
    cohorts within the department
  • Purpose of this section is to summarize and
    provide an overall view of the candidates
    performance over the evaluation period
  • Do not include actual annual evaluations

External Evaluations
  • 5 letters from external reviewers are required
  • Reviewers should be full professor
  • Unless an exception is approved
  • At a minimum, from institutions with programs
    comparable to UNT
  • Strongly recommended that reviewers from
    institutions with prominent national/international
    reputations

  • Do not select close friends
  • Only in extraordinary circumstances should
    graduate school colleagues, former professors, or
    former colleagues be selected, and an explanation
    must be given
  • Selection procedure
  • Candidate submits at least four names
  • Candidate may also submit list of people to
    exclude

  • PT assembles at least four reviewers
  • Chair may also submit names
  • PT and Chair select at least 5 reviewers for
    total
  • Attempt to select one name from each list
    submitted
  • All letters received will be sent forward

  • Reviewers emphasis should be on quality and
    significance of candidates work
  • Not a recitation of publication record
  • Nor merely praise
  • Compare candidate to cohort
  • Address potential for continued productivity
  • Address whether candidate should be promoted
    based on UNT departments criteria

  • Departmental recommendations
  • PT committee recommendation
  • Evaluation by Chair
  • Both extremely important
  • Should discuss the same issues addressed in the
    faculty essay
  • Brings focus, context and support for the tenure
    case recommendation

Advocate
  • Each PT candidate has an advocate to present
    their case to College PAC
  • It is expected that advocates will effectively
    represent candidates
  • Advocates will prepare Powerpoint presentation
    according to CAS template
  • Advocates communicate departmental expectations
  • Review accomplishments in teaching, research and
    service
  • Comment on collegiality
  • Provide context for any anomalies in record
  • Provide background on candidates research area
    and quality
  • Answer question from PAC members

  • Early deadlines for receiving external letters
    and completing dossier
  • Faculty essay is critically important part of
    dossier
  • Select appropriate reviewers
  • Encourage in-depth evaluation, not just praise
  • Chair and PAC evaluations VERY important
