  • Overall Android Market maintains a steady 2.6
    growth in number of apps.
  • New added apps in May contain 34 paid apps which
    slightly lowers the share of paid apps on Market
    to 36.1.

Android App Store Platforms
  • Growing competition in Android Market urges the
    developers to seek for alternative app
    distribution channels.
  • Currently these distribution channels can be
    classified into two categories
  • 1) Aggregators which only provide app information
    and usually just link to the Android Market. They
    have no direct business relation with the app
    developers
  • 2) Independent app stores with developer
    submission and app promotion functions. They have
    a business relation with the developer submitting
    apps onto their stores
  • There are stores which combine both roles. They
    display Android apps collected from the Android
    Market Place and allow developers to submit their
    apps directly to their store.
  • Aggregators concentrate on tracking original
    Android Market content and aim to provide better
    app discoverability and search functions,
    including exclusive app reviews, recommendations,
    user communities and variety of other services.
  • Their re-distributed apps number ranges from 67
    thousands to 320 thousands. The numbers include
    inactive apps which have been submitted to the
    Android market once but are being deleted or
    replaced by a new version afterwards.

Independent app stores
  • There are nearly 30 independent app stores which
    stores and sell Android apps. 12 of them are
    full-catalog stores, which also provide apps for
    multiple platforms. All others specialize in
    Android apps. Other stores concentrate only on
    Android tablet apps. They are not shown in the
    graph.
  • Independent app stores try to attract developers
    by offering additional reach for their apps,
    allow advanced on-platform marketing campaigns
    and promotion support.
  • Not all independent app stores are shown in the
    graph because of missing app number information.
  • 2 The number of apps in Android Pdassi store
    refers to 14th of June, 2011, whereas apps in
    other stores were counted on 26th of May 2011.

Android Market key metrics overview
  • Android Market remains the fastest growing app
    store. In May it maintained a steady 2.6 growth
    rate over the past few months and adds more apps
    than many other stores put together.

App Number Dynamics in the last four weeks
  • As of the end of May it features 216,018 apps,
    36.1 of which are paid.
  • In May 29,000 new applications were submitted to
    the Android Market, just like a month ago.
    However net additions were lower. The actual
    number of active apps in store grew by 15,000 (in
    April 17,000), however this time the share of
    paid apps added was 33, whereas in April the net
    new adds featured 42 of paid apps.
  • App numbers have been revised since the last
    volume of Android Market Monitor. All in-active
    Android apps have been eliminated.
  • Games, Entertainment and Tools apps are the three
    categories that generated 48 of all downloads so
    far, however average downloads per app are
    significantly higher in minor categories, such as
    Weather or Communication.
  • In addition, the average selling price dropped
    again by 3 back to US3.15. Much more
    significant changes can be evidenced within
    categories, for example in May Finance apps are
    11 cheaper, whereas Health Fitness cost 22
    more than in April.
