What Are Skin Hives?
4
Do you think that you might be experiencing skin
hives?
5
if so then you probably are wondering what is
causing your hives and what can be done to get
relief from the itching.
6
Here we will take an in depth look at why people
commonly develop hives, angioedema and what you
can do to relieve the intense itching.
7
Skin hives are actually extremely common.
8
They are so common in fact that it's been
estimated that roughly 1 out of 5 people will
experience the development and symptoms of hives
at least once during their lifespan.
9
This is a skin condition that really packs a
punch, and it's true medical name is urticaria.
10
From here there are some things that are
important to address.
11
For instance, people will either experience 1 of
2 forms of urticaria (hives).
12
There is either acute, meaning that it is
temporary and will not last longer on average
for more than 6 weeks.
13
Acute urticaria can be so short as to only last
for a few hours.
14
However, if you have noticed your hives have been
around for longer than 6 weeks, then you probably
have chronic urticaria, which can last anywhere
from a couple of months up to several years.
15
In both cases of chronic and acute hives, the
symptoms and physically noticeable spots (known
as wheals or welts) can disappear from one part
of the body and reappear on another.
16
During chronic urticaria, it's very common for a
hives patient to experience an intense outbreak
that can last for a varying range of time, and
then have the urticaria completely clear up on
it's own, only to reappear some time later.
17
For chronic urticaria sufferers it's very
frustrating, because it can be a question of
"when is it going to return?".
18
Earlier I had mentioned the spots that itch and
are noticeable with hives.
19
These are commonly referred to as 'wheals' or
'welts'.
20
They can vary in size.
21
Some might be as small as a few
centimeters, while others may be as large as
several inches.
22
Typically these spots will have a whitened or
blanched center, with obvious redness or
inflammation around the edges.
23
The main symptom is that they itch very
intensely.
24
Is there any swelling that you notice along with
your hives? If so, the correct term for this is
angioedema.
25
Allergists have explained that angioedema is
deeper tissue swelling that many times can also
accompany urticaria.
26
Hives are not believed to be life threatening,
but the wheals can pop up on any part of the body.
27
The genitals, arms, legs, torso, buttocks, back
and face are very common.
28
Although hives are not regarded as life
threatening, there are two things that you
should first know.
29
1. The swelling known as angioedema can commonly
affect the face and mouth.
30
This will cause your appearance to look puffy.
31
Your eyes can swell along with your lips.
32
The danger is that this angioedema can also
occur within the throat, which could potentially
constrict your airflow.
33
If you are having difficulty breathing and are
feeling dizzy or lightheaded - then you may need
emergency medical attention.
34
2. In some cases urticaria can actually be a
sign that you have something a little more
troubling going on.
35
Without scaring you, I mean to say that many
cases have been known to show that the symptoms
of hives are actually the result of an underlying
auto-immune disorder.
36
Requesting testing involving some basic blood
work can shed a lot of light on this.
