FS201 Course Design Guiding Principles
  • This course integrated weekly, HTML-based course
modules with chat and video using the Moodle
    Learning Management System
  • Due to the introductory nature of the course and
the unfortunate fear that students often bring
with them to science courses, we chose to take a
light-hearted approach to the introduction of new
    scientific ideas.
  • In addition to the materials in the course
itself, we used weblinks to connect our course to
give students multiple ways to explain ideas to
    themselves.

FS201 Course Design Software
  • Dream Weaver
  • Flash Animation
  • LecShare Voice-Over and Subtitling Software
  • Moodle
  • Post-production Editing Software
  • Mediasite Recording Software

10
Course Design
  • This course was designed around weekly lessons.
  • Students navigated from a Moodle Home Page to
  • HTML lesson pages or chat rooms.
  • Weekly lessons involved an introductory
    paragraph, 2-3 weekly exercises, and a wrap-up
    exercise.
  • HTML pages were linked to PowerPoint
presentations with voice-over and subtitling, as
    well as videos.
  • See page captures in the succeeding slides.

Our Approach Engage the Emotions
  • Learning is intrinsically linked to emotion.
  • We used bright colors, animation, and downright
silliness in order to positively engage students.
  • The purpose of these techniques was to make
    science approachable.

21
Lessons Learned
  • Moodle is a versatile Learning Management System,
but its grade book needs improvement
  • Subtitling software varies in its ability to
    handle special characters

22
End of Tour!
  • Thanks for taking a tour of FS201, Food Science
    and the Consumer, with us.
  • Now take a tour of the course itself.
  • Log-in as a Guest
  • Your Enrollment Key is tltc
  • Keep in mind it was written in Fall of 2008, so
references to Thanksgiving, Halloween, etc. were
    topical at that time.
  • We look forward to talking with you on Tuesday,
March 17 at 1020 for our synchronous discussion
of the course and answering any questions.
