What is a Narrative Essay?

• A personal essay that is built around a main
  idea. This main idea is the thesis of the essay
  and will emphasize a point that the story will
  illustrate.
• Many times, a narrative essay asks you to
  describe an experience that lead to an important
  realization or conclusion.

Characteristics

• Written from the perspective of the writer.
• Because a narrative is similar to a story, it
  includes a plot, setting, characters, a climax,
  and an ending.
• It highlights a truth that you have discovered
  and uses the story (your narrative) to illustrate
  its importance. In this way, it then has meaning
  to the readers as well.

Points to Remember

• Details are key ingredients to rebuilding a story
  for your reader. These details will make the
  story more real. Enhance your writing by using
  strong verbs, vivid descriptions, and dialogue.
• Dont forget that you are using a story to
  illustrate an important life event. Tell your
  story with this purpose in mind.
