2The past century has brought many changes
in the way we live
and work
3Our lifespan and our expectations - have
expanded . . .
And, more is expected of us, as well
4In 1900, one-room schoolhouses were common
- Only 10 percent had high school diplomas
- Less than 3 percent had a college degree
- One in four had less than a fifth grade
education - Muscle was more important than
knowledge
5What did the average worker make?
- 12.98 a week
- Worked 59 hours
What were teachers paid?
6Education Today
- More than 80 percent have a high school
diploma - About 25 percent have a college degree

across the globe
Information-based industries increasingly require
higher skill sets and more education

46I cant say enough about the Tech Prep program.
I have four sons two have completed the program
and two are currently high school juniors. Each
Tech Prep student has an Individual Career Plan.
These were very beneficial to my two older sons
and are helping my twins now. The business
partners are wonderful! - Deb Eggman,
Parent, Joliet Central
47"Tech Prep gives kids a focus. It helps them
realize the many choices they actually have and
it helps prepare them for a good career."
-Leroy Kaylor Beardstown High School
48The development of technical skills is crucial
to meeting the challenges of the workplace of the
21st Century. Tech Prep meets this challenge.
It gives young people an opportunity to tie what
they learn in the classroom to real-world
applications. Theory meets practice. -Ronald

50If it hadnt been for the Tech Prep program, I
dont know what Id be doing now. I had no idea
I would have any interest in manufacturing until
I began my apprenticeship. After I received my
associates degree in manufacturing engineering
technology, I became a Camshaft Quality
Technician. Tech Prep was a big, big boost to
my career. -Jeremiah Sisney, former
Tech Prep student, Danville
