My Teaching Philosophy
  • My Teaching Philosophy
  • The more we are exposed to ideas and concepts,
the more comfortable we become until, in the end,
they seem quite obvious and even commonplace. As
a teacher, I use repetition to assist me in
presenting the information in all formats
visual, audio and kinesthetic, so no matter how
you learn, you will have the opportunity to
learn. Themes are presented and reviewed until
the tasks become second nature to you.
  • My Teaching Credo
  • I begin from the premise that our higher
self-your higher self and my higher self- knows
what is best for us and is looking out for us by
guiding, prompting, and leading us to people,
    places and circumstances through serendipity.
  • I believe that each teacher brings his or her own
experiences, strengths, and gifts to the table
and that, though there may be many courses on
each subject known, each one will be different
    because of this.
  • I feel students should learn from a variety of
teachers and that my teaching methods and class
materials are not any better or worse than any
    others, just different.
  • I feel it is difficult, if not impossible, to set
a specific standard that is the ultimate of
ultimates for any subject no one has all the
answers for everyone. The best we can do is look
at the banquet of offerings, tune into the energy
of each, and follow our gut.
  • I believe in empowering my students with the
knowledge they need to make informed decisions
about which is the best way for them to go, for
    their highest good.

2009-2010 Region Champions Pinecrest Academy
Catholic School
  • This is one of my favorite teams that I coached
in 2009-10, Early in the season one of my players
Julia Grimaldi s brother died of a brain tumor.
Our team dedicated the season to him and had
4joe on all of our clothes for every game. In
the region final we played Dominion Christian who
had a 26-0 record. We played this game with great
passion and determination and lead the game from
start to end with a 43-29 victory over a great
opponent. What I learned from this game is that
there are more important things than winning and
when a team plays for something bigger than
    themselves, remarkable things will happen.

Team Theme Pack of
Wolves
  • The Wolf Pack
  • Each season I give my team a team theme that will
give them a sense of belonging to a special
group! This past season we were the pack of
    wolves!
  • Wolves have a constant visualization of success.
The collective wisdom of wolves has been
    progressively programmed into their genetic
makeup throughout the centuries. Wolves have
mastered the technique of focusing their energies
toward the activities that will lead them to the
    accomplishment of their goals.

  • The following is how we determine who plays on JV
    or Varsity team
  • We will evaluate each player at the end of every
    practice.
  • Each player will be ranked based on their
attitude, effort , basketball skills and team
    execution.
  • Players will know where they stand at every
    practice.
  • This ranking system will constantly change based
on each players daily effort, attitude and
    execution.
  • We will dress out all players for every varsity
game and they will all sit on the bench.
  • We will dress out from 7-10 players for the JV
    games.

13

    F.
  • Have an immediate conference with coach with
    getting a D or F.

    excuse.
  • UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
  • 1st offense (5 late practices)
  • 2nd offense (5 late practices/2 game suspension)
  • 3rd offense (dismissal from the team)

14
Player Expectations
  • Late Practice Policy
  • Being late for a practice, game, meeting or bus
    time.
  • Not having proper equipment for a practice or
    game.
  • Leaving your equipment or belongings in the gym,
    locker room or bus.
  • The team leaving equipment or a mess in locker
    room or bus.
  • Failure to meet dress and appearance standards

  • 3 LINE DRILLS (UNDER 30-SECONDS, RUN EVERY
    MINUTE)
  • 3 SETS OF WALL JUMPS (20-SECONDS- REST 10
    SECONDS)
  • 3 SETS OF DEFENSIVE SLIDES (20-SECONDS- REST 10
    SECONDS)
  • 30 PUSHUPS
  • The assistant coach will have the player do these
at the end of the practice.
  • It is the responsibility of the players to
remember their late practice. Failure to remember
a late practice by a player will double the
    workout for the next day.
  • A player who violates any of the above rules may
also have their playing time affected. Repeated
violations and an inability to meet the demands
of the program will result in the player being
dropped from the team. WE WANT OUR PLAYERS
    WELL-DISCIPLINED.

15
Parent/Coach Communication
  • Both parenting and coaching are very difficult.
By establishing an understanding between coaches
and parents, both are better able to accept the
actions of the others and provide a more positive
experience for everyone. Parents have the right
to know, and understand, the expectations placed
on them and their child. We ask that you wait 24
hours after a game before meeting the coach.
  • COMMUNICATION PARENTS SHOULD EXPECT FROM
    THEIR CHILDS COACH
  • 1. Expectations the coach has for your
child, as well as for other players on the team.
  • 2. Locations and times of practices and
    contests.
  • 3. Team requirements, special equipment,
    off-season expectations.
  • COMMUNICATION COACHES EXPECT FROM PARENTS
  • 1. Concerns regarding their daughter,
expressed directly to the coach, at the
    appropriate time.
  • 2. Specific concerns in regard to the
    coachs philosophy or expectations.
  • 3. Notification of any schedule conflicts
    well in advance.
  • APPROPRIATE CONCERNS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR
    COACH
  • 1. The mental and physical treatment of
    your child.
  • 2. What your daughter needs to do to
    improve.
  • 3. Concerns about your daughters
    behavior.
  • ISSUES NOT APPROPRIATE FOR DISCUSSION WITH
    YOUR DAUGHTERS COACH
  • 1. How much playing time each athlete is
    getting.
  • 2. Team strategy
  • 3. Play calling
  • 4. Any situation that deals with other
    student athletes.

16
Practice Philosophy
  • Every time we take the floor, we practice and
play with the technique, intensity and toughness
    of a state championship team.
  • Practice Goals
  • Work harder than anyone
  • Concentrate
  • Talk
  • Compete
  • Our practices are the lifeblood of our program
  • The Ability to Compete!
  • Our goal is to get our players to give 100
percent effort in every drill in every practice
session throughout the entire season. If we can
accomplish this goal, then we will have instilled
in our players the ingredient most essential to
    winning- THE ABILITY TO COMPETE.
  • Practice Structure
  • We divide our practices into the following
    blocks
  • Pre-practice skill development
  • Team meeting
  • Fitness warm-up
  • Post/Perimeter Skills
  • Offensive Practice
  • Shooting Drills
  • Defensive Practice
  • Free Throw drills
  • Team competitive/transition drills
  • Special Situations/Time and score
  • Team/Fun drill
  • Post Practice Skill Development

Defensive System Defense Wins!
  • Philosophy
  • We love to play defense. Our ball hawking, floor
slapping, in your face defense is our teams
greatest strength. We believe and teach that
great defense is all about heart and hustle.
Our attitude on defense is that we are going to
make you work, on every possession to score. We
are not going to give you any easy baskets. We
are going to do everything in our power, within
the rules of the game, to keep you from scoring-
maximum ball pressure, quick help, taking the
charge, pressuring the shot, blocking out,
rebounding. If you make a quick shot, then thats
OK, but its not going to be easy.
  • Defensive Covenants
  • Our defensive system is based on one main
concept STOP THE BALL- getting the ball stopped,
as early as possible, before it penetrates by
dribble or pass. In order for us to be a great
defensive team, we must constantly focus our
    energy and determination towards the
    accomplishment of these three defensive
    principles
  • PRESSURE, PRESSURE, PRESSURE- we want to put
extreme ball pressure on the player with the
ball. She must be forced to take her eyes off the
basket and make her look down to the ground when
attacking our pressure. In addition, make the
player with the ball turn her back and be a
    non-threat with the ball.
  • NO GAPS- We teach our players off the ball to get
into their gaps so they are in position not to
allow any dribble penetration or post touches. We
teach early help and early recovery.
  • ONE AND DONE- All five of our defenders must
complete the defensive possession by either
boxing or checking out their offensive opponent.
The defensive possession is not complete until we
    get the ball.

18
Offensive System Maximize
Possessions
  • Philosophy
  • We love to play up-tempo basketball. Our style of
play is to run and attack. We push the ball up
the court at every opportunity. As we push the
ball up the court, we look to score- primary
break to secondary break, secondary break to our
    set offense.
  • Our primary goal on offense is to play team
basketball. To us, team basketball is about not
forcing shots, making the extra pass, and
attacking the basket to score, but willing to
pass to the open player if the help stops you.
  • Offensive Covenants
  • We need to execute the following four offensive
covenants in order to be successful. The shots we
want within our offensive system are THREE-KEY-
OR FREE. This means that our players have the
freedom to shoot the three, drive and into the
key or drive and get fouled and go to the free
    throw line.
  • RUN, RUN, RUN- We want to get easy shots through
our fast break system. Our ability to hold our
opponent to one shot, rebound and outlet the ball
to our point guard is the key to our fast break
system. We run a numbered sideline break where
each player is assigned a lane to run and the
point guard must find the open man in the break.
  • GET THE BALL INSIDE- We want to get high
percentage shots in the paint. We believe in the
3-point mentality when the ball gets inside. We
can pass inside to our post player or we can
dribble into the paint and get to the rim. Either
way puts a lot of pressure on the defense and
will force three point opportunities by
converting the shot and getting fouled and making
    the free throw.
  • DRIVE AND KICK THREES- We like to spread four
players on the perimeter so if we do penetrate,
then we allow our players to spot up and get
kick-out passes for three point shots.
  • 2ND CHANCE SHOTS- This is a big part of our
offensive system. Considering that 60 of shots
or more are missed, this is a great opportunity
to get easy baskets by putting our players into
position to get offensive rebound put-back shots.
CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE WON FROM OFFENSIVE REBOUND
    PUT-BACK MAKES.
