NASA's Mars Phoenix Lander began sending photos
of the planet's surface on the first day of its
three-month mission "to taste and sniff the
northern polar site's soil and ice," the space
agency said. The first pictures, which the lander
began taking shortly after touching down near
Mars' north pole -- the end of a 422 million-mile
trek -- showed a pattern of brown polygons as far
as the camera could see.

A bomb exploded on a crowded commuter train in a
southern suburb of Sri Lanka's capital Monday,
killing seven people and wounding at least 72
others, police said. The parcel bomb had been
placed in the luggage rack on the train, which
was bound for the southern town of Panadura, 27
kilometers (17 miles) from Colombo, police said.
Many of those on the train were office workers
headed home at the end of the workday, police
said. The bombing came amid a nationwide alert
triggered by the discovery of at least three
packages, in three different towns, that
contained bombs.

- Disaster teams searched for more victims Monday
5/26 in areas devastated by weekend tornadoes
that killed at least seven people in the Midwest.
Six people were reported dead Sunday 5/25 in
Iowa, and a toddler was killed in Minnesota,
authorities said. A tornado touched down at about
6 p.m. Sunday in the north-central Iowa town of
Parkersburg before moving 10 miles east to New
Hartford, said Bret Voorhees with the Iowa
Department of Homeland Security and Emergency
Management. Streets were lined with huge piles of
debris that included crumpled vehicles, uprooted
trees and unidentifiable material that had been
part of houses 24 hours earlier. Minnesota Gov.
Tim Pawlenty planned to meet with local
authorities to tour the affected areas.
5News Brief for the Week of 5/18/08
Sen. Barack Obama accused Sen. Hillary Clinton of
stoking anger in Florida and Michigan over the
Democratic Party's decision not to recognize the
states' primary votes. Obama, speaking to
reporters on his campaign plane late Saturday,
also took on Sen. John McCain's suggestion that
Obama's lack of military service makes him
unqualified to criticize him on veterans issues.
Obama returned to his home base of Chicago,
Illinois, Saturday night after a campaign swing
through in Puerto Rico, which holds its primary
June 1, and spending three days in Florida. Obama
said he wants a resolution of the controversy
over the seating of the Florida and Michigan
delegations so that they "feel that they've been
treated fairly and they're seated."
