2If you have a high school senior, no doubt youve
started to think about their graduation ceremony.
Its a big milestone for both your student and
you, so make sure to plan ahead! Senior year
tends to go by really quickly, because youre
busy applying for colleges and scholarships, and
before you know it, May is here and theyre done!
If you plan ahead, you wont have to worry about
it and will be able to enjoy a great celebration
when its all over.

3Many homeschoolers nowadays join with a larger
group for a graduation celebration, whether a
co-op theyve participated in or perhaps a state
homeschool graduation. Those kinds of events
have deadlines, so pay attention and make sure
you get your applications in on time! Some of
those kinds of events actually fill up, so dont
risk the disappointment of not getting to
participate, and stay on top of dates.

4Even if you participate with a larger group, you
may still want to have your own private home
graduation party. These events usually involve
food, decorations, and maybe even a short
program, so planning is key here too. Check out
your local party store for decorations, because
they usually have a ton of stuff related to
graduation. Some of the decorations will indicate
a year, but others wont, and will simply say
Congratulations. If you go to the party store
after the graduation season, you can buy
discounted things in your graduation color and
then use them the following year when your child
graduates.

5Graduation party food can be as basic as
hamburgers or as elaborate as you want you could
even have the event catered! After all, this is
a big celebration! When our boys graduated, we
had a reception with some food at our home, but
other people might rent a reception hall or a
church, or even have their reception and
graduation someplace other than at home. The
local park could be a great option too!

6The ceremony itself can include whatever you want
it to. It should include whatever you think is
most significant, which will be different for
different people. In order to make it a little
more fun, you could play the traditional
graduation song, Pomp and Circumstance, which
can be found easily online or in a music store.
Alternatively you could have little siblings who
are proficient with instruments play the music!
Perhaps you will want to include a blessing, a
dedication, praise of the student, an accounting
of their accomplishments, or a scripture. There
are dozens of different things you can include,
based on what is important to you.

7Some tasks might best be delegatedI had my
husband speak to the group, because I knew I
would probably not be able to get through any
kind of presentation! Do whatever will make this
occasion special and memorable for you and your
graduate. There is one thing I recommend that
everyone includes in a ceremony, and that is to
present your student with a high school diploma
of graduation. Your homeschool is official, and
your diploma is official, and their graduation is
official! You want them to remember in the
future that they did get an official high school
diploma.

8Graduation can be an emotional time. If you write
down what you want to say, youll be less likely
to forget something thats really important for
your child to hear from you. Dont feel like you
have to rush, and dont worry about what other
people might think about what you say! This is a
really meaningful time, the end of one period and
the beginning of another, so take all the time
you want to enjoy it, and communicate your love
and pride to your student. Enjoy!
