About London
  • The City of London is the capital of the
    United Kingdom and of England and a major world
    city". Founded as Londinium, the capital of the
    Roman province of Britannia, it later rose to
    become the centre of the British Empire. Today it
    is a major financial centre along with New York
    and Tokyo.

Location
  • The coordinates of the centre of London are
    approximately 5130' N 08' W . London is
    situated on the bank of the river Thames.

Population
  • Residents of London are known as 'Londoners'. In
    2001, the City had 7,172,036 inhabitants, making
    London one of the most populous cities in Europe
    alongside Moscow, Istanbul and Paris.

Government
  • The Greater London Authority (GLA) is the
    London-wide body responsible for co-ordinating
    London-wide services.
  • The GLA consists of the elected Mayor of London
    and the elected London Assembly.

Sport
  • London is home to 11 professional football clubs.
    Some of these are Arsenal, Charlton Athletic,
    Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Fulham, and Tottenham
    Hotspur.
  • London is home to many major sporting clubs as
    Lord's, Marylebone Cricket Club, and Rugby
    League. London hosts one of the world's largest
    mass-participation road races, the London
    Marathon.
  • London has twice hosted the Summer Olympics, in
    1908 and 1948. It is one of the cities bidding to
    host the 2012 Games.

Festivals
  • The most famous festival is the Notting Hill
    Carnival. The carnival takes place in August, and
    attracts almost 2 million people. It includes a
    competition between London's steelpan bands and a
    3 mile street parade with dancing a music.
  • There are also large parades held on St.
    George's Day (23rd April) and St. Patrick's
    Day (17th March).

  • There are over 260 museums in London.
  • The main museums include the British Museum
    (antiquities from all over the world), the
    Victoria and Albert Museum (applied arts), the
    Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, the
    Imperial War Museum, the National Maritime

Buckingham Palace
  • Buckingham Palace is the official London
    residence of the British monarch and the largest
    "working" royal palace remaining in the world.
  • The palace originally was built for the Duke of
    Buckingham in 1703.
  • Its the London home of Queen Elizabeth II.

  • The London Eye is, as of December 2003, the
    largest observation wheel in the world (though
    often called a Ferris wheel).
  • It stands 135 metres high on the western end of
    Jubilee Gardens, on the South Bank of the River
    Thames

St Pauls Cathedral
  • St Paul's Cathedral is a cathedral in
    London.
  • The present building dates from the 17th century,
    and is London's fourth St Paul's Cathedral. Work
    commenced on the cathedral in 1675, and was
    completed on October 20, 1708.
  • Its impressive dome rises 108 metres and makes it
    a famous London landmark.

  • The Tower of London is officially Her Majesty's
    Palace and Fortress. It is on the bank of the
    River Thames. In 1078 William the Conqueror
    ordered the White Tower to be built there.
