Title: Who Wants to be a Macro Millionaire
1Who Wants to be a Macro Millionaire?
- CAM 7
- 2005 East Fork Lewis River Watershed Water
Quality Project
2Introduction Welcome to todays edition of Who
Wants to Be a Macro Millionaire? a CAM 7/
Battle Ground Schools production I am the
announcer for the show, Gavin ___. Helping make
this event possible is our incredible technical
crew Daniel ___ - audio-video technical
coordinator and Nathan ___ - our audience control
engineer. Nathan holds up Enthusiastic
Applause sign The topic of todays show is
Water quality on the East Fork of the Lewis
River, and the benthic macroinvertebrates who
live there. You may be wondeingr why we chose
this important topic -- other than the fact that
the river is close to our school and our science
teacher, Mr. Clapp, likes the place. The East
Fork of the Lewis River has been called the
Jewel of Clark County. One of the only
free-flowing streams of its size on the Columbia
River, the East Fork is considered an important
spawning stream for endangered salmon and
steelhead. The river is also popular for
recreation, such as fishing, swimming, and
kayaking. Now, on with the show. Our contestant
for today is a 7th grade student in the Battle
Ground School District. His interests are scuba
diving, playing football, and building banana
splits. Lets give a nice, warm welcome for Ian
___. (clap, clap) Nathan holds up Politely
Clap sign And now, the host of our show is the
very talented, the very intelligent, the very
humorous, Anthony ___!!! Nathan holds up
Enthusiastic Applause sign
3For 10 MacrosWhat type of macro is shown here?
- Ameletid Minnow Mayfly
- Little Green Stonefly
- Free Living Caddisfly
- Damselfly
4Characteristics of an Ameletid Minnow Mayfly
- Gills on abdomen
- Three feathery tails
- Torpedo-shaped body
- Short antennas
5For 50 MacrosWhere is the East Fork of the Lewis
River located?
- North of Battle Ground
- East of Camas
- South of Ridgefield
- West of Portland
6Our testing siteLewisville Park
7For 100 MacrosWater temperature of 7.9º C would
be considered
8A look at the standards
All temperature readings taken this year met the
standard of being below 16º Celcius. Summer
temperatures, however, were not measured. Class
AA (extraordinary) means water quality exceeds
requirements for all uses
Class AA
9For 500 MacrosWhat level of dissolved oxygen is
considered good for fish and macroinvertebrates ?
- High
- Medium
- Low
- Fish dont breathe air, so it makes no
difference.
10Dissolved Oxygen results
Class AA
- All our tests this year met the Class AA standard
of more than 9.5 mg per liter of dissolved oxygen
11For 1,000 Macros Canopy cover along streams is
considered ..
- Important
- Moderately important
- Not important
- Pretty attractive
12Benefit of Canopy Cover
- Canopy cover varies by stream and land use
- Too little canopy cover, however, can cause the
streams temperature to rise - Warm stream temperature can cause too little
dissolved oxygen
13For 5,000 MacrosWhat is Neutral on the pH scale?
14For 10,000 MacrosWhat pH level is considered
tolerable for fish?
50/50
15Water Standards for pH
Class AA
Our test results this year were within the Class
AA standards range of 6.5 to 8.5
16For 50,000 MacrosIs heavy runoff from farms good
or bad?
- Bad
- Good
- None of the above
- All of the above
17For 100,000 MacrosWhich chemical tests are used
to measure nutrient levels in the water?
- Phosphates and Nitrates
- Turbidity
- pH
- Conductivity
18What did we find?
- Our results met the US-EPA Water Quality
Criteria for Class AA of lt10 mg/L
19For 500,000 MacrosIs high turbidity good or bad
for water quality?
- Bad
- Good
- Makes little difference
- Huh? Whats turbidity?
Turbidity Measurement of particles
(mud/sediment) in the water
20What were our results?
Our turbidity test results all met the standard
for Class AA (extraordinary)
Class AA
21For 1,000,000 Macros What time of the year does
the East Fork experience the greatest streamflow
(cu. ft./ sec)?
- Winter storms (Dec- Feb)
- Fall rains (Sep- Nov)
- Spring thaw (Mar - May)
- Banana harvest time
22Conclusion Oh, wow! Ian was a fabulous
contestant, and oh, so close to becoming our
first Macro Millionaire. Just one final question
-- but, his banana obsession got the better of
him. Thank you for watching our show. We hope
you learned a few things about the East Fork of
the Lewis River. As you saw, many of our tests
for the East Fork scored Excellent. However,
our macroinvertebrate studies support a water
quality rating for the East Fork of only good.
Based on information from the county and the
Washington Department of Ecology, their findings
also show some concerns with the river. The
primary issues seem to be water temperature and
bacteria. We did not test the river during the
time of its lowest flow and warmest temperature.
And, we did not conduct tests that would show
bacteria problems. Our only clue to possible
problems came from our macro surveys. We do hope
that recent plans announced by the Department of
Ecology to improve water quality on the East Fork
will have a positive effect. Their plans are
likely to address land use and development, since
these seem to be the most common concerns
mentioned for the watershed. Be sure to be back
next year for our followup report on ... the East
Fork of the Lewis River and the
macroinvertebrates that live there. This is is
your host, Anthony ___, ... signing off!
