2The Pivotal ChaptersA Little Review from Last
Time
- Are these and subsequent chapters allegory or
historical? - Is Ch. 2 a second (conflicting) creation account?
- Why does Gods name change?
- The creation and roles of completed humanity (man
and woman) - The Garden of Eden metaphor or literal?
- What is the origin of evil?
- Who is the serpent and what is he doing in the
garden? - Why did perfect humanity sin?
- What exactly is sin?
- What is the fall out of sin for the creation and
humanity - What is the plan of redemption?

- And
- The Hope of Redemption
4Deception and BetrayalThe Fall of Mankind
5Deception and Betrayal
Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of
the field which the LORD God had made. And he
said to the woman, "Indeed, has God said, 'You
shall not eat from any tree of the garden '?"
And the woman said to the serpent, "From the
fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat
but from the fruit of the tree which is in the
middle of the garden, God has said, 'You shall
not eat from it or touch it, lest you die.'"
Genesis 31-3
- Crafty (arum) prudent, full of wisdom, wise
positive connotation - cunning / crafty negative connotation
- Word nuance enlightening - the flip side (good
Kirk / bad Kirk) - most powerful gifts can be used for good or evil
6Deception and Betrayal
Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of
the field which the LORD God had made. And he
said to the woman, "Indeed, has God said, 'You
shall not eat from any tree of the garden '?"
And the woman said to the serpent, "From the
fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat
but from the fruit of the tree which is in the
middle of the garden, God has said, 'You shall
not eat from it or touch it, lest you die.'"
Genesis 31-3
- Note Both YHWH Elohim and Elohim
- Serpent has no covenant relationship with God as
do the man and the woman - The woman then refers to the Personal YHWH as
Elohim sin separates us
7Deception and Betrayal
And the serpent said to the woman, "You surely
shall not die! "For God knows that in the day
you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you
will be like God, knowing good and evil."
Genesis 34-5
- you will be like God
- Elohim debatable translation based on grammar
diving beings or God
- Serpent implies the only reason for the
prohibition was that God was protecting the
divine domain. - Most obvious of lies questioning of our
Fathers motives - If God feared mans power grab, why give them
the possibility to begin with - Mans destiny is/was to understand through
knowledge of God alone
Takes what was indeed spoken, leaves out key
details, and injects a plausible argument based
on the new faulty reference point
8The SerpentOur Adversary and Our Response
9The SerpentOrigin and Career
- The power behind the powers Ezekiel 28
- Remember Scripture / prophecy works at
multiple levels - Passage speaks to the power behind the power
"Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king
of Tyre, and say to him, 'Thus says the Lord God,
"You had the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom
and perfect in beauty. "You were in Eden, the
garden of God Every precious stone was your
covering The ruby, the topaz, and the diamond
The beryl, the onyx, and the jasper The lapis
lazuli, the turquoise, and the emerald And the
gold, the workmanship of your settings and
sockets, Was in you. On the day that you were
created They were prepared. "You were the
anointed cherub who covers, And I placed you
there. You were on the holy mountain of God You
walked in the midst of the stones of fire.
10The SerpentOrigin and Career
"You were blameless in your ways From the day
you were created, Until unrighteousness was found
in you. "By the abundance of your trade You were
internally filled with violence, And you sinned
Therefore I have cast you as profane From the
mountain of God. And I have destroyed you, O
covering cherub, From the midst of the stones of
fire. "Your heart was lifted up because of your
beauty You corrupted your wisdom by reason of
your splendor. I cast you to the ground I put
you before kings, That they may see you. "By the
multitude of your iniquities, In the
unrighteousness of your trade, You profaned your
sanctuaries. Therefore I have brought fire from
the midst of you It has consumed you, And I have
turned you to ashes on the earth In the eyes of
all who see you. "All who know you among the
peoples Are appalled at you You have become
terrified, And you will be no more."'" Ezekiel
2812-19 (NAS)
11The SerpentOrigin and Career
The roots of his fall The 5 I wills
" How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son
of the morning! How you are cut down to the
ground, You who weakened the nations! For you
have said in your heart 'I will ascend into
heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars
of God I will also sit on the mount of the
congregation On the farthest sides of the north
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
I will be like the Most High.' Yet you shall
be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of
the Pit. Isaiah 1412-17 (NKJV)
12The SerpentA Battle Between Light and Darkness
- The Reality of Opposing Forces
- We are at the center of a cosmic battle of wills
- To deny the spiritual battle is to deny a true
reality
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but
against principalities, against powers, against
the rulers of the darkness of this world, against
spiritual wickedness in high places. Ephesians
612 (KJV)
- Job 40-41 God confronts Job with reality
- Leviathon and Behemoth used as symbols of evil
Job repents
Then Job answered the LORD, and said, "I know
that Thou canst do all things, And that no
purpose of Thine can be thwarted. 'Who is this
that hides counsel without knowledge?' "Therefore
I have declared that which I did not understand,
Things too wonderful for me, which I did not
know." 'Hear, now, and I will speak I will ask
Thee, and do Thou instruct me.' "I have heard
of Thee by the hearing of the ear But now my eye
sees Thee Therefore I retract, And I repent in
dust and ashes. Job 42 1-6
13The SerpentOrigin and Career
The serpent is the Devil / Satan
And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent
of old who is called the devil and Satan, who
deceives the whole world he was thrown down to
the earth, and his angels were thrown down with
him. Revelation 129 (NAS)
And I saw an angel coming down from heaven,
having the key of the abyss and a great chain in
his hand. And he laid hold of the dragon, the
serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and
bound him for a thousand years, and threw him
into the abyss, and shut it and sealed it over
him, so that he should not deceive the nations
any longer, until the thousand years were
completed after these things he must be released
for a short time. Revelation 201-3 (NAS)
14Desirable Fruit
When the woman saw that the tree was good for
food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and
that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she
took from its fruit and ate and she gave also to
her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes
of both of them were opened, and they knew that
they were naked and they sewed fig leaves
together and made themselves loin coverings.
Genesis 36-7
For all that is in the world, the lust of the
flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful
pride of life, is not from the Father, but is
from the world. - 1 John 216 (NAS)
15Desirable Fruit
When the woman saw that the tree was good for
food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and
that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she
took from its fruit and ate and she gave also to
her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes
of both of them were opened, and they knew that
they were naked and they sewed fig leaves
together and made themselves loin coverings.
Genesis 36-7
Good for food lust of the flesh Delight to
the eyes Lust of the eyes desirable to make
one wise pride of life
Doorways to our downfall
Adam and Eve had desire not glossy eyed children
16The SerpentOur Adversary Our Response
- The serpent the nature of the beast
- Sin alignment with that which opposes God
- Commandments speak to that which invites God
- Embodies all that opposes God
- Devil (diabolos) the evil one, the accuser,
the slanderer - He accuses God to us and us to God
He who hates disguises it with his lips, But he
lays up deceit in his heart. When he speaks
graciously, do not believe him, For there are
seven abominations in his heart. Though his
hatred covers itself with guile, His wickedness
will be revealed before the assembly. He who
digs a pit will fall into it, And he who rolls a
stone, it will come back on him. A lying tongue
hates those it crushes, And a flattering mouth
works ruin. - Proverbs 2624-28
17The SerpentOur Adversary Our Response
How Our Mouths Reflect Our Alignment
So also the tongue is a small part of the body,
and yet it boasts of great things. Behold, how
great a forest is set aflame by such a small
fire! And the tongue is a fire, the very world
of iniquity the tongue is set among our members
as that which defiles the entire body, and sets
on fire the course of our life, and is set on
fire by hell. For every species of beasts and
birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is
tamed, and has been tamed by the human race. But
no one can tame the tongue it is a restless evil
and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our
Lord and Father and with it we curse men, who
have been made in the likeness of God from the
same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My
brethren, these things ought not to be this
way. - James 35-10 (NAS)
- Lashon hara tongue of evil
- A weapon or a vessel of healing
- Purveyor of truth or merchant of confusion
- Ammunition / salve rooted in the meditations
of our hearts (Mark 720-23)

the Witnesses Pronouncing JudgmentA Promise of
Parole
19The Inquiry
And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking
in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man
and his wife hid themselves from the presence of
the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
Then the LORD God called to the man, and said to
him, "Where are you?" And he said, "I heard the
sound of Thee in the garden, and I was afraid
because I was naked so I hid myself." And He
said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you
eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not
to eat?" Genesis 38-11
20Fallen Mans Testimony
And the man said, "The woman whom Thou gavest to
be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I
ate." Then the LORD God said to the woman,
"What is this you have done?" And the woman said,
"The serpent deceived me, and I ate." Genesis
312-13
- I centered self-preservation
- When I am out of alignment, I instinctively look
for a scapegoat
- Excuses for Disobedience
- If I do this, my wife will make my life
miserable - The devil made me do it both true and false
sin crouches at our door, but we must master it
(Gen. 4)
21Judgment and Redemption
And the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because
you have done this, Cursed are you more than all
cattle, And more than every beast of the field
On your belly shall you go, And dust shall you
eat All the days of your life And I will put
enmity between you and the woman, And between
your seed and her seed He shall bruise you on
the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel."
Genesis 314-15
- Prophecy
- Describes the struggle that will wage throughout
history - First prophecy of the Redeemer to come and the
judgment He will bring - Serpent will deliver a wound in the flesh of the
Redeemer - Redeemer will deliver a mortal wound to the
serpent
22Judgment and Redemption
To the woman He said, "I will greatly multiply
Your pain in childbirth, In pain you shall bring
forth children Yet your desire shall be for your
husband, And he shall rule over you." Genesis
316
- Desire (Teshuwqah) and Rule (Mashal) a huh
factor - Does not refer to sexual or emotional desire
- Prophesies a struggle for control between them
(context of judgment) consistent with conflict
between the seeds - Phrasing and words consistent with Genesis 47
struggle between Cain and sin
To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase
your labor pains with pain you will give birth
to children. You will want to control your
husband, but he will dominate you." - Genesis
316 (NET Bible)
23Judgment and Redemption
Then to Adam He said, "Because you have listened
to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from
the tree about which I commanded you, saying,
'You shall not eat from it' Cursed is the ground
because of you In toil you shall eat of it All
the days of your life. "Both thorns and
thistles it shall grow for you And you shall eat
the plants of the field By the sweat of your
face You shall eat bread, Till you return to the
ground, Because from it you were taken For you
are dust, And to dust you shall return." Genesis
317-19
24Judgment and Redemption
Now the man called his wife's name Eve, because
she was the mother of all the living. And the
LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his
wife, and clothed them. Genesis 320-21
The Eve Factor Lets here from Angela Franey
25Mitochondrial Eve
by Angela Franey
26Mitochondrial eve
- mitochondrial are the chemical power plant of a
cell - Mitochondria have their own DNA- separate from
nuclear DNA
27Mitochondrial Eve
- Female contributionOovum, Male contribution
sperm
28Mitochondrial Eve
- mtDNA is similar in all humans alive today
- Identical ancestors point is estimated to be
between 5,000 and 15,000 years ago - Allan Wilson named Mitochondrial Eve after the
creation story. - There is a Y-chromosomal Adam
- Seems to support the Single origin and
Out-of-Africa theories. (Ethiopia, Kenya or
Tanzania) - Does not line up with evolutionary time line
-140,000 yearsMisconceptions? - http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitochondrial_Eve
29Expelled
Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has
become like one of Us, knowing good and evil and
now, lest he stretch out his hand, and take also
from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever
"-- therefore the LORD God sent him out from
the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from
which he was taken. So He drove the man out and
at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed
the cherubim, and the flaming sword which turned
every direction, to guard the way to the tree of
life. Genesis 322-24
