The Blue Ring Octopus

• Hapalochlaena lunulata
• Most Venomous octopus
• About 8 inches across if the arms are spread out
• Found in. Australia!!!
• Blue rings only light up as a warning to others

• Carries enough poison to kill about 20 adults in
  minutes
• Delivers the poison through its saliva
• Uses its powerful beak to deliver a deadly bite
  with paralyzing neurotoxin

Onset of nausea.  Hazy Vision. ( Within seconds
you are blind.) Loss of sense of touch, speech
and the ability to swallow.  Within 3 minutes,
paralysis sets in and your body goes into
respiratory arrest.

  octopuses brain
• Two types, one used on prey, and one on predators
• Secretes poison in the vicinity of the prey

The Giant ClamTridacna gigas

• The largest Bivalve mollusk
• Often times weighs over 500 lbs
• Over 4 feet long
• Thought to live over 100 years
• Found in the South Pacific and Indian oceans.
• In particular near the great barrier reef
• Have a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae
• Open during the day to receive sunlight

Giant Squid

• Up to 18 m (59 ft)
• Up to 900 kg (1,980 lb, nearly 1 ton)
• Has ten arms, two are longer than others used for
  feeding
• Have hooks and circular saw like suckers on them
• Hooks have ability to rotate

• Unknown where they dwell
• Thought to live 1000 meters and below the surface
  of the ocean
• Predators are sperm whale
• Never caught a live specimen
• Recently filmed a live giant squid
• Attracted it with ground up gonads!!bb

• Scientists believe that the blood of a squid
  cannot carry oxygen well in warm waters
• Also believed that warm water affects the
  buoyancy of the squid
• Squid carcasses often found in areas where a warm
  stream meats a cold stream of water

  squid

• 1965 giant squid seen battling large sperm whale,
  both end up dead
• 1930s The Brunswick attacked by giant squid

Vampire Squid

• Found in deep deep waters (3000m)
• Covered with photophores that it can turn on or
  off to remain invisible in the dark water
• Although its only about 6 inches long has large
  eyes (largest by ratio of any animal)
• Resembles a jellyfish more than a squid
• Has sharp toothlike structures that cover its
  tentacles
• One pair of these tentacles can extend to 2 times
  the length of the creature to capture food

• LACKS ink sack, instead has amazing speed
• Ability to go up to 2 body lengths per second
• Also can manuver extremely well for being very
  gelatinous
