Slick with the Click
9
Delivery Mistakes
  • Clicking Mistakes
  • There should be no vocal pause when you click
the images should just appear behind you as you
    talk.
  • Talking to Screen
  • The 1 mistake in PowerPoint delivery dont
retreat to the screen instead of making eye
    contact with your audience.
  • Letting PowerPoint Take Over
  • Youre giving the speech the slides are there
simply to illustrate a couple of things that
    youre saying.

Slide Mistakes

  • Reduce sentences to key words
  • Harsh Fonts/Colors
  • Spelling Errors/Typos

  • inconsistency in layout and capitalization
  • (i.e., look at this slide)

11
  • NOTE This learning module would not be
appropriate for an oral presentation. It has WAY
too much text! Reserve PowerPoint for information
you cant convey orally. This includes

12
What to Include
  • Keyword Lists
  • If you have a long list of something that you
want your audience to absorb all at once.
  • Note Avoid animation on lists. Often, clicking
through point by point will drain the energy from
    your speech.

13
Influenza Symptoms
  • Dry Cough
  • Aches in legs
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Weakness

14
What to Include
  • Keyword Lists
  • Visuals

For example, this image comes up as you say
The Belgian Blue Bull illustrates this
naturally occurring myostatin deficiency-- a
promising form of gene therapy for muscular
dystrophy patients.
16
Maps can be very helpful visuals for historical
events, world conflicts, etc.
17
What to Include
  • Keyword Lists

Additional Note
  • When you arent referencing something on a slide,
click to a black slide or no show on the system
remote. Leaving an image up behind you can
distract your audience from your next point.

22
How to Practice
  • After youve researched and prepared your outline
  • (usually takes several drafts)
  • Always practice out loud.
  • Run your speech with a timer 7-10 times. The
first 3 will be terriblekeep at it!
  • Resist the urge to write out a script and
memorize it. You will look and sound speechy,
and we will have a difficult time absorbing what
    you say.
  • Break it down-- practice individual segments
(Intro, Point 1, Point 2) and think of them as
mini 1-2 minute speeches. Ideally, run through
these segments when it is impossible to reference
notes (e.g., while driving, in the shower, etc.).
  • If you plan to use PowerPoint, practice in the
lab with the remote. Make your clicking second
nature so that it looks seamless and natural.
