5Alternative Tourism
The alternative forms of tourism combine tourist
products or separate tourist services different
from the mass tourism by means of supply,
organization and the human resource involved.
These are rural, ecotourism, adventure (biking,
horseback riding, snowshoeing, ski
mountaineering, rafting, diving, caving,
climbing), thematic tourism connected with the
cultural and historical heritage, the esoteric,
religion, wine, traditional cuisine, ethnography
and traditional music and handicrafts.
6Sustainable tourism
- Sustainable tourism is a new category and is a
continuation of the conception for sustainable
development which was launched at the conference
in Rio in 1993. It is a result of the concerns to
the protection of endangered regions on the
planet as a whole and in particular the tropical
woods. However, it treats urban and rural
regions, cultural and historical heritage as well
and consequently has broader coverage than
ecotourism. - Sustainable tourisms objective is minimizing
tourism influence on the local environment
through promoting its conception to tourists
before and during their holiday as well as
provoking nature conservation practices ever
since the conception stage in the outgoing sector.
7Types of definitions
- Basic difference between rural tourism and
agritourism - Agritourism Agricultural Tourism
- It refers to the act of visiting a working farm
or any agricultural, horticultural or
agribusiness operation for the purpose of
enjoyment, education, or active involvement in
the activities of the farm or operation.
8Agritourism in the narrow sense
- Agritourism is a style of vacation in which
hospitality is offered on farms. This may include
the opportunity to assist with farming tasks
during the visit. .. Agritourism has often been
proposed as a means to prop up a local
agricultural economy when local producers are no
longer economically competitive otherwise.

10Agritourism as a part of sustainable tourism
- Agritourism is the form of tourism which
capitalizes on rural culture as a tourist
attraction. It is similar to ecotourism except
that its primary appeal is not the natural
landscape but a cultural landscape. If the
attractions on offer to tourists contribute to
improving the income of the regional population,
agritourism can promote regional development. To
ensure that it also helps to conserve diversity,
the rural population itself must have recognized
agrobiodiversity as valuable and worthy of
protection. - http//www.gtz.de/agrobiodiv/download/agrotourismu
s_engl.pdf
11Rural Tourism
- is a recreational experience involving visits to
rural settings or rural environments for the
purpose of participating in or experiencing
activities, events or attractions not readily
available in urbanized areas. These are not
necessarily agricultural in nature. - UC Cooperative Extension, San Diego County
12Definition of Rural Tourism
- Any form of tourism that showcases the rural
life, art, culture and heritage at rural
locations, thereby benefiting the local community
economically and socially as well as enabling
interaction between the tourists and the locals
for a more enriching tourism experience can be
termed as rural tourism. Rural tourism is
essentially an activity which takes place in the
countryside. It is multi-faceted and may entail
farm/agricultural tourism, cultural tourism,
nature tourism, adventure tourism, and
eco-tourism. As against conventional tourism,
rural tourism has certain typical
characteristics, like it is experience oriented,
the locations are sparsely populated, it is
predominantly in natural environment, it meshes
with seasonality and local events and is based on
preservation of culture, heritage and traditions. - Oklahoma Agritourism
13EU definitions
- Rural tourism
- regards the activities of a person travelling and
staying in rural areas (without mass tourism)
other than those of their usual environment for
less than one consecutive year for leisure,
business and other purposes (excluding the
exercise of an activity remunerated from within
the placed visited). - Eurostat. 1998. Community Methodology on Tourism
Statistics. European Commission. Luxembourg.

20In other definitions, howeverrural tourism and
agritourism is a synonym
- Rural tourism involves tourists witnessing or
participating in activities that form the core of
country life such as farming (synonyms farm
tourism, agrotourism /agritourism). Loosely
defined it can encompass any activity that takes
place in a non-urban, populated area. With farm
incomes dwindling in many "developed", but also
"developing" countries, and people migrating to
cities or abroad, rural tourism is often seen by
planners as a magic wand to stop rural decay - Antonis, Athens, Greece
21Proposal for the purposes ofAgroTourNet
- Agritourism is a form of alternative to mass
tourism based on sustainability, preservation of
culture, heritage and traditions in rural areas. - It comprises all forms of tourism in which
tourists visit farms and in rural villages,
eventually board in them, and experience farming
and various forms of rural life at close hand. It
aims at bringing the visitor in touch with the
natural environment, agricultural activities,
local products, and a communitys lifestyle,
while at the same time contributing to the host
area economic stability
22OF COURSE, IT IS A MATTER OF DISCUSSION Thank
you for attention!
