2What is an Entailment?
From Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
(1913) Entail \Entail"\, v. t. imp. p. p.
Entailed p. pr. vb. n. Entailing. OE.
entailen to carve, OF. entailler. See Entail,
n. 1. To settle or fix inalienably on a person
or thing, or on a person and his descendants or a
certain line of descendants -- said especially
of an estate to bestow as an heritage.
3What is an Entailment like?
Entailment is like the succession to the throne
in the British Monarchy. The succession is based
on the concept of male primogeniture, which means
that men inherit over women.

5How is succession determined?
Succession to the throne is based on the
principle of male primogeniture, according to
which male heirs take precedence over daughters
and the right of succession belongs to the eldest
son. Daughters take precedence over the
Sovereign's brothers. When a daughter succeeds,
she becomes Queen Regnant and has the same powers
as a king. Where a Sovereign has no children, the
succession then lies with the Sovereign's eldest
surviving brother and his children (sons, then
daughters), as when William IV was succeeded by
his niece Victoria. If a Sovereign has no
brothers, or if those brothers have no children,
then the line of succession passes to the
Sovereign's sister(s) in age order, as when
Edward VI was succeeded by his half-sisters Mary
and Elizabeth.

10The Difference Between an Entail and the
British Monarchical Succession
is simple . . . Any man inherits before any
woman.

12Consider as you read . . .
What opportunities were there for women to work?
(What kinds of jobs were available to the
gentlewoman whose skills were needlework, piano,
singing, and dancing?) What would happen to the
Bennet girls if their father died and they were
unmarried? To what degree is Mrs. Bennets
obsession with wealthy suitors understandable and
acceptable?
