2Somebody Wanted But So
- Provides a framework for students to summarize
stories - Helps students identify key aspects of stories
- Allows for different perspectives by
choosing a different somebody
3SWBS
- Somebody main characters
- Wanted main ideas
- But conflict
- So resolutions

6Example Vinces Problem
- Vince was making a toy clock to give to his
sister for her birthday. He used a dinner plate
to draw a circle on a piece of wood and cut out
the circle using his fathers jig saw. He now
wants to find the centre of the circle so that he
can attach the hands of the clock. He remembered
hearing somewhere that this could be done using a
right angle but he couldnt remember how this was
done. Can you help him find a way?

7Example Vinces ProblemFrom the text
He needs to attach the hands
He needs to find the center
Vince
To make a clock
Vince
To find the center of the circle
He cant remember how
Well help him
8Example Vinces Problem From the solution
Two diameters would cross at the center
The center is where the two diameters cross
To find the center of the circle
We
We need a right angle to find the diameters
Well use a right angle to find two diameters
We
To draw two diameters of a circle
We
We dont have a protractor
Well use the corner of a piece of paper
To use a right angle
9Example Vinces Problem
- Solution Take a large piece of paper with a
right angle in the corner. Put the corner on the
edge of the circle and mark where the two edges
of the paper meet the circle. -
- If these marks are joined the line passes
through the centre of the circle. -
- If this process is repeated after putting the
corner of the paper on another place on the edge
of the circle, another line passing through the
centre can be drawn. These lines cross at the
centre.
10A Math Word Problem
- Concept Finding Unit Cost to Compare Price
- Problem
Sarah wanted to buy her first cell phone but
there were two wireless providers to choose from.
Super-cell offers a phone plan that includes 250
base minutes for 24.99 a month. Easy-Phone has a
plan that includes 325 base minutes for 34.99 a
month. Which is the better buy?
11Summary of Sarah and her cell phone"
There were two wireless providers to choose from
Sarah found the unit cost for each provider and
compared to find the better buy
Sarah
To buy a cell phone

13Alternate Summary of Sarah and her cell phone"
Super-Cell 250 min. for 24.99 a month
Sarah
To find the better buy
and
Easy-Phone 325 min. for 34.99 a month

14A Word Problem
- Concept Writing Equations in Slope Intercept
Form - Problem
Tom works as a water delivery person, and
earns 210 per week. He also earns 20 commission
on any sale he makes. Find the equation that
relates total earnings (t) to sales (s) so Tom is
able to calculate his weekly salary.
15Summary of Sarah and her cell phone"
Tom needed to find a relationship between total
earnings (t) and sales (s)
Tom determined with no sales t 210 and
with sales t 210 0.2s
Tom
To be able to calculate his weekly salary
Relationship between total earnings and sales t
0.2s 210
16Let's Debrief!
- We liked this strategy. Although it is easier to
apply to Reading/LA, it can be adapted for math. - Somebody What does the problem say?
- Wanted What do we need to find to solve the
problem - But What information does the problem actually
give me (But I only know .) - So This is what I need to do to solve the
problem
