Australian indigenous culture stretches back more
than 40,000 years while Europeans first settled
Melbourne on the banks of the Yarra River in 1835
when it was part of the British colony New South
Wales. In 1851, the colony of Victoria was
separated from New South Wales and this area
became the Australian state of Victoria.

After less than 50 years of settlement, the
British journalist George Augustus Sala, dubbed
it 'Marvellous Melbourne'. Announcements of gold
discoveries, in country Victoria, in 1851. Led to
thousands flocking to to the city
The ethnic mix of Melbourne's population has
always been an important influence on the city's
character the Chinese and Irish diggers

Immigrants leaving Britain in 1852 bought more
tickets to Melbourne than to any other
destination in the world.

After WWII - arrival of refugees and migrants
from all over Europe (particularly Greece, Italy,
Yugoslavia, Turkey and Poland) These migrants
have boosted Melbourne's population to 4 million

cosmopolitan, suburban, cultivated, football
crazy, conservative and a haven for the

Visitors come for its shopping, restaurants,

Melburnians to believe that they live in one of
the most civilized cities in the world.
